Off To camping Du Letty In France This Summer.Do I Need A New Style Photo License Or Can I Still Travel With My Old Paper One

I still have my old green paper license and have travelled abroad with it for years. Mind you I don't know what would happen if I had to produce it. I think the present consensus of opinion is that it would be better changing over to the new photo license as these are in line with European licenses. I did hear something some months ago that sometime this summer the charge for changing over to pastic was going to be scrapped. Haven't heard anything more though.

We only have the green paper licences and we are not going to the expense of buying the new one. We drive in France every year and never worried about it. Its still a legal UK driving licence and your passport backs it up if photo evidence is needed. If they scrap the charge and make the old one redundent then we will do it.

You should have seen the gendarmes face when I gave him my tatty old bit of paper last year! But he accepted it as a legal licence... I now have a photocard as I moved house in the Autumn.

BTW, there is no charge to change from paper to plastic IF you are also changing details like name or address.

The OLD green licence was valid in the EEC until the advent of the PINK covered green paper licence with the GB symbol on it.   In line with Brussels edicts, all EEC countries must show which country the licence comes from.
Don't forget, the paper part is your actual licence. The photo card is just to prove you are the holder of the licence.

When I got a totally accidental parking ticket in Carnac four years back I had to present myself at the Mairie with my licence and pay the fine. What a palaver that was with an olde style GB paper licence! The staff couldn`t speak english, I can`t speak much french, they couldn`t make out my licence and I was completely adrift with the form. The only thing that was in our favour was that they were eager to help out this mad Scot that was so obviously keen to pay the fine and clear the matter up.

Eventually we photocopied the licence and stapled it to the form. I`ve never heard anything since, so assume it was accepted. But I wouldn`t like to be caught in the same sort of situation with a bolshie french traffic cop who wasn`t so helpful. So I`m getting a photo licence as soon as my one and only endorsement expires.

Actually it is £19 UNLESS you are also changing a legally notifiable detail such as name or address when it is £0.

Ooh, so it is. Did they reduce the price then. I'm dead sure it was £19 when I got mine done, I would have paid it too except for the nice lady in the post office told me it was free for a change of address. I note that to change a plastic licence such as to remove endorsements is now £22.    

BTW have you seen how much a passport renewal is now, just doing OH & offspring, I nearly choked - and they rejected the photos...

On this page it states 'GB' Licence. The PINK fronted GREEN licence states 'GB' THe previous all GREEN licence did not.

We only changed our licences a couple of months ago. It was £19 then.   It must be the only thing this government has ever reduced.

Yes it used to be £19. Looks like they decided against a free exchange though. Don't know why. If it was free then everyone would exchange it a lot quicker.
