We are looking to do a circular tour of central France in July. We will be taking our Norfolk Terrier and want to spend about 4 nights at each site, visiting three sites. We want to go to the Loire Valley and then anything else to get us to and from there.

We have had a look at the site but some of the campsites don't have reviews yet (for example Hortus Le Jardin De Sully in the Loire Valley).

We would appreciate any views you have on sites that would combine what we would like to do which are reasonably quiet but have decent enough facilities (i.e. at least a shower block).

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Hi

It might be worth your while consulting Select Sites and  / or Alan Rogers (maybe buy the France Guide?).

TT.

Stayed at that site for the first few days in July last year on our way back home. At that time they were in the process of building a swimming pool, so that should be finished now. Also there were some chalets being built, not that many though as I remember. Pitches are quite generous, and it is a nice walk into Sully-sur-Loire over the river. Also very good for cycling in that area, we cycled for miles and miles! We had a good impression of the site, but a Frenchman we met and played jeux-de-boules with there, complained that since the new owners had taken over it was much more regimented. We were not able to pick our pitch for example, and apparently you used to be able to. He had been going there for a lot of years, but it obviously had not put him off as he was there for a month.....We would go back again definitely.

PS It has 2 toilet blocks, and they were very clean and sufficient for the site in our opinion. The site did seem to be used by quite a few overnighters, as well as by people staying longer, it isn't that far from the N20.

PPS Have submitted a review today for this site!

Ina.

Thanks Ina, we will definitely be going to this site thanks to your response. So what site should we choose on the way down and on the way back?

What do you like?  Do you want to be on the coast, or near a city?   Do you like sightseeing, or just 'chilling around the pool'?  There are so many sites in France, all different, that it would be difficult to give just a generalised recommendation.   Have you planned your (approximate) route?  All these things will affect the recommendations people give.

As a generalisation most french sites have excellent facilities, even the smallest municipals, in villages without any particular tourist attractions.  There are some very attractive sites in such places.  Even in July you should find a pitch, probably without advance booking on small sites like this.  However, if you want to go for larger sites, nearer to popular tourist magnets then you may have to book in advance.  The Michelin green guide gives a selection of every type of site, from the smallest municipal to the biggest '5 tents in red' site.  The Caravan Club Europe 1 book also lists all sorts of sites, usually with comments from members of the CC to help you make a decision.

So what site should we choose on the way down and on the way back?

Not knowing your arrival point in France that is a bit difficult to answer and also a lot depends on personal taste. It also depends on whether you go down west or east of Paris. We have stayed at a site in Blangy-sur-Bresle, not far off the A28 to Rouen, Camp Municipal les Etangs and also at Camping de Sorel, Orvillers Sorel, near Roye. When we had tents we used to just overnight for 1 night at a time on the way down to where we were going and the same on the way back. So when we went down to, say, the Vendee, we used to do that in 2 overnight stops, as we never used to like driving for more than about 5 hours a day or so.

We always go across on Eurotunnel now and when travelling to the Loire for example, stay over 1 night on the way there. You say however that you want to stay on 3 sites, 4 nights each. Is that the total of your holidays or are the overnighters there and back on top of those 12 nights? How long have you got altogether? It's just that there is also a really nice site in Chinon, about 140 miles southwest of Sully-sur-Loire. It is a municipal, very reasonable, about 8 euros a night last year. It is by the river and has fantastic views across it to the castle opposite, is an easy walk into town, where there are lovely restaurants, markets and shops.

If you want any more ideas/help, ask away. Have to go now.

Ina.

Thankyou, your feedback is invaluable.

Much as it might seem like it, we are not being lazy, its just that this is our first time in France with a dog and are open-minded enough to accept any suggestions based on members personal recommendations. Many of the French sites we looked at didn't have much info re personal impressions from members on this site, and that is what we are looking for.

The fact we are looking at Central France I think demonstrates we are not worried about the beach But I accept I probably didn't provide sufficient info:

We would be going via Eurotunnel, have done Brittany and Calais area to death. Also the Vendee, but never stayed at the Loire Valley. Happy to travel on the 5th day each time, which doing a circular tour I would expect wouldn't incur any more than 4hrs drive each time, so total is as described (which equates to 13 days by my reckoning).

Facilities = Hot showers..... anything else is a bonus.

PS. Thanks for taking the time to post so far.
