Stayed there a couple of nights last year. That was in September though, not July. Saying that, it was extremely busy, as they take Camping Cheques and we were pretty lucky to get in, and we arrived just before 12 noon! (we never book ahead, preferring to go where the mood takes us). So I don't know how busy it would be in July and if you would need to book. The site is in 2 parts, reception and 1 site on one side and the other across the road. Pitches vary, some are quite a bit bigger than others and manoeuvring on and off some of them is quite difficult due to trees and the roads not being that wide. It is a nice site with a good toiletblock, clean and right by the beach. Only drawback for us was that the pitch we were on was at the back of the restaurant-kitchen, and the continuous hum of the fans in the kitchen got on our nerves in the end! But further away on the site you wouldn't hear that. We cycled into Royan one day, there is a cyclepath all the way and it is a lovely cycle ride and Royan is worth a visit.
Ina.

Stayed there 10 (!) years ago (really doesn't seem like it) - so anything I say could be well out of date.

Very busy site, very big. Some pitches were completely on sand - which I guess won't affect you in a van, but the sand contained large amounts of ants and it wasn't the most pleasant camp I've ever had, so I wouldn't recommend those pitches to anyone. It might be worth asking when you book just in case.

Apart from that, it's an excellent site, good chippy, good bar well away from most pitches, short walk to the beach. There are other sites next door - Camping Number 1 I think one of them was called, which seemed to be even bigger than Bois Soleil.

StGdD itself is a small, old, town, and Royan across the bay is very busy and even a bit posh - lots of shops and seafront restaurants. The harbour is worth a view too. Any year we were there, the Paris Opera did a free classical music concert with fireworks on the beach at Royan in July, called something like "musee sur la plage". Not sure if they still do that or not.

[EDIT - yep, they do  http://www.pyrotechnie.org/13-spectacle-808.html ]

Hi

I haven't used that site but I have stayed at ST GdD, and would echo the comments above. A nice area, and either St G or Royan are nice for a evening stroll. We also tried the ferry, with the car, across the Gironde just for something different to do one day. We ddn't like the beach-particularly at Royan (crowded and poor water quality IMO, so each day we drove a bit further up the coast towards La Palmyre where it seemed nicer. Traffic was usually very heavy (end of July). Saintes is a lovely town and worth a trip, as was Cognac....

TT.

Hi Keith, we stayed there last May. We liked it, good cycle track along the sea front, right on the beach, nice sunsets. The only down side was the swimming pool wasnt open until June. The shop on site wasnt bad, and the toilets and showers were OK. Some of the pitches had trees in the middle of on them, but we enjoyed it and will go there again.

Ho No had enough of tree's in the middle of the pitches, remember my saga with the CC and Puerto Del Sol. I think we will give this site a miss

Thanks for all your replies will look elsewhere.
