I know our ananlogue systems are not compatible (PAL vs SECAM) but can anyone enlighten me regarding compatibility of our digital systems (ie will a Freeview decoder work there?) In this era of European standardisation you would have thought they could get this sorted, but I suspect not!

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
In a word, yes. BUT, you'll need to attach it to a small satellite dish to be able to receive the signal. This place is stuffed with such items of equipment today! Some watching the Grand Prix (can't stand it myself) some watching 'normal telly. Rest have gone out to sample the real world.
I actually like French TV. There are some good series on, some of the usual crap US Imports, badly dubbed, but some interesting stuff sometimes. Maybe it's because the novelty of living here hasn't worn off yet, but also because it's a good way to improve my French.
Leave the telly at home. Sit outside you tent /motorhome/caravan. Look at the stars over the rim of your wine glass. Pure heaven for absolutely nothing except a few euros for a bottle of decent wine.

I suspect if you attach a Freeview decoder to a satellite dish, nothing much will happen.
You'd be wrong then. What happens is you receive Free to Air TV Channels. I know, because I have that very thing set up here to run from a digital dish, 8-way LNB to feed 3 gites and 5 rooms in our house.
i hvae a sat dish that i have used in france, get all the channels, same as at home, mind you they are only freeview ones as i have the freestat card from sky. best thing is where ever you start up your system (at home before you go is the best idea) you will get the same local channels like your local bbc for news ect.
one point, if you do get a freeview card from sky, get your system working a few weeks before you go, you will need to call them to enable the card and it could take 24 hours, also try to use it at least once a month, i have had my card not working after i put the gear away and had to call them to get it working again. hope that helps.
Just to clarify, I was not proposing to use a satellite dish, nor receive UK programmes. I was just wondering whether a Freeview decoder would work on the French digital terrestrial network (assuming they have one)

Thanks for your numerous inputs so far

In that case, no. It won't, sorry. You need to be able to recieve the signal somehow, and as you'll be out of the UK 'footprint' for a normal aerial, than a dish is the only way to receive.
