I have seen this topic being covered elsewhere - Your Insurance will give you a basic 3rd Party cover for an entire year anywhere within the E.U.
I quote from my M8's comment "All vehicle insurance policies in the EU are required to provide "the minimum cover required by law" in all EU countries at all times. As a worst-case option, you could tour indefinitely within the EU on UK insurance without breaking the law.
Of course, "the minimum cover required by law" isn't usually Fully Comp. It's closer to 3rd Party only with additional restrictions (so, for example, depending on the country you might not be covered on camp sites).
The 90-day rule is a limit set by your insurer on how long they will cover you over and above the legal minimum. Unfortunately for us, they're entirely within their rights to do so!
