Somebody suggested us taking our newly aquired tent and equipment to Brittany next year. I can see there are many caravanners who do this, but what about people with tents? Do many campers go? How easy is it and any advice on ferries or general tips. We were loking at L'Atlantique or Du Letty. It's all very complicated. Oh when can you usually book as none of the sites go very far in advance.

1. it's a doddle - go for it - check out sticky on what to look for for continental first timers
2. depending when you're planning on going and what you want - you may not need to book

We take our tent to France every year. The sites are wonderful. The roads are great to drive on. Great food and drink and better weather. All good reasons for going so go for it. Tent camping is huge in France and a French campsite is a great experience. We usually book the ferry as soon as the deals come out around October and the site early in the New Year. We always go after August 15th which is the end of the traditional French summer holiday and classed as mid or even low season by a lot of the sites so the roads and sites are less hectic and site fees lower or can even fall into Camping Cheques or ASCI card acceptance periods which is how we plan to pay for this years site. It would be worth your while googling both to look at the advantages and savings you can make by travelling outside the French holiday season of mid July to mid August.

We've been going for years! It's great. If you look at the top of this board there's a sticky topic with all you need to know, but really it's as easy as falling off a log. We've had our ferry and site booked since before Christmas and we booked a hotel for the last night back in April.
We're going here as we went last year. It's about 90 mins from the sea but the pool stays open till midnight ans is pretty chav-free. You might want a site with more Brits though as its your first time.

hope that helps

Liz

Go for it. Lovely country, great roads, good driving standards, nice people, great food and drink, brilliant sites. You'll never regret it.

Cheers,
John

I too am interested, so thanks for the tip on mid-Aug onwards.

Anything to get away from the Rain in UK.

However I was at Spain more than France, but the journey to Barcelona outskirts seems long, espcially for a 7-10 day break. Any suggestions on sunny french, child-friendly sites near France/Spain border ?

Go for it! Lots of info on here about going abroad :)
We haven't been to France but last year took our biggish tent, camping gear, 3 kids and 3 bikes on the back to Holland. It was a fantastic holiday.
Contemplating France myself but its a long way to to channel from where I live so its the drive this side putting me off!

You can always tell the Campers among us, as we whizz past the "tin tents" on the motorways to their destination!LOL!

Joking aside, I went camping for the first time in 10 years last summer. We went to Loire-Altlantique area of Brittany and we all had a great time.

I am going to the Alps this year, but I am lucky to be renting an apartment. We are going to take our 3 second Quechua, a couple of sleeping bags & an airbed for a couple of nights though & just see where we end up! Maybe Italy or down on the South Coast of France.
