We're off on our first ever trip to Eire soon. We have two pressing issues to be resolved before we go:

1) Can anyone recommend a good motor-home friendly camp site near Rosslare - for a couple of nights maximum?

2) We're determined that our first pint of Guinness under the Irish flag will be in Dublin. Which is the best pub/bar in which to achieve this?

The rest will follow naturally. Ideas, recommendations and advice greatly appreciated.

I can help you with 1) - St. Margarets Beach, 15 mins from Rosslare Harbour. We've used it a few times as a boat stopover.  http://www.camping-ireland.ie/caravan-parks/camping.php?id=16 To be honest I wouldn't recommend any of the other Wexford sites. There's also decent sites in the neighbouring 3 counties (Caseys or Newton Cove in Waterford & River Valley or Roundwood in Wicklow & Nore Valley in Kilkenny) if you wanted to go a bit farther on.

2) I'll leave for those who have put in more research than me .......

Now I need a camp site in or near Dublin. I've tried Camac Valley which was my first choice but they're fully booked. Can anyone recommend a good site with nearby public transport to get into the city - so I can go to the Guinness factory (Thanks johnnyh).

Any other suggestions for Dublin bars?

Camac Valley is THE site for Dublin - a shame you can't get in. You might want to phone back and ask if they could squeeze you in somewhere (and no I'm not joking ) or keep you on a waiting list. If you're a C&CC member, you can try booking the site through Carefree - they might have some pitches reserved ?

The only other site for Dublin is North of the city, at a village called Rush. I believe you can get a bus from there in to the city, but you'd need to check on that, and how far it is to the bus stop, etc, before you book http://www.camping-ireland.ie/caravan-parks/camping.php?id=14 . I can't vouch for the site personally, but I know someone who went there regularly for weekends, so it can't be that bad. Don't expect anything celubrious though.

If you want to stay South of Dublin, try phoning the 4 sites in Wicklow listed in the webpage above to see if any of them are near buses into the City Centre. I'm fairly sure none will be near train stations. There used to be a site yards from Shankill train station, but it's someones living room now

The only other thing I can think of is Tree Grove http://www.camping-ireland.ie/caravan-parks/camping.php?id=17 a half hour walk from Kilkenny centre, where there are 6 trains per day to Dublin Heuston (1.75 hrs journey). Kilkenny is very nice btw, and a short drive from Cashel. CIE (covers all buses and trains) here http://www.cie.ie/home/ - trains over here are a lot cheaper than you're used to.

We too are planning on touring N  Ireland and Eire this summer, I found this website very helpfull for the different areas http://www.ireland.ie/. in the accomadion drop down box loads of sites in different regions.

As for sites near Dublin we booked calmac 3 months ago, but came across this site . I hope you find a site nr Dublin. We are looking forward to a real pint of its finest, may see you in there.

Get over to Galway and Mayo....some lovely sites in Clifden (Galway) and Achill (Mayo).

Some of the sites in Mayo are right up on the beach....smashing views in the morning/evening.

Dublin is ok.but very very busy..like a mini London, but friendly people...

PS*****Galway coastline is good for wild camping*****

Thanks to everyone - with your help we've now covered the advance bookings. And some excellent ideas for bars. We'll try them all. We're actually planning a few days in the Rosslare area, then Killarney for the Ring of Kerry, on to Galway and finally going to Dublin. So we're reversing our original itinerary.

Needless to say, we're looking forward to the trip. And we'll probably pass you arthurdent en route - although we may be a little later by time we reach Pembroke for the ferry. (Norolk has its attractions as well).
