OK.

My personal preference is for Normandy having a strong interest in WW2 myself. I don't know much about North eastern France but the distance from the Cherbourg Peninsular to the battlefiled is probably around 250 miles or so.

If you camp anywhere around Cabourg you will be in the heart of the invasion beaches and can easily access other areas of interest, Paris isn't that far either. Arromanches is worth a visit with a good Overlord museum and when I visited, there were sections of the old mulberry harbours on display. War cemetaries are worth a visit too. Other than the WW2 links Caborg and Deauville a lovely resorts, Deauville can be a bit pricey but has a superb old fashioned Lido and boardwalk along the seafront and a massive indoor pool. Cabourg is a little less exclusive but the beach is equally lovely with masses of blue and white striped parasols for rent.

Bayeux is also within easy reach...but I guess the historical interest there is from a different invasion!

I stayed near Amiens in a cottage a few years ago and visited the WW1 bits. Very distressing seeing all those graves and esepcially the memorial for those whose bodies were never found. That is an absolute must in my opinion.
Have also visited the D-Day landing beaches which put a lot more perspective on how brave the all were to get off the boats - especially the Americans.
I would try to do both...
