The place is Carcassonne.

There are enough campsites of all sizes and descriptions around this area to suit everyone - i.e.2 in Michelin, 9 in Caravan Club Guide etc., etc. No need to book, just arrive for a couple of nights and then you can have a day exploring and find your own special site for the rest of your stay!

That looks lovely - I'm going to pass it on to friends who are going to Carcassone in late July, it's just their sort of place.

http://www.site-france.com/languedoc-roussillon/aude/campings/camping-le-martinet-rouge.htm  We've stayed here, near Carcassone, and that was nice - but it's a while ago.  We've also stayed at http://www.lesbergesducanal.com/ which is bigger, but OK - and Camping Neptune at Agde, walking distance to the 'end' of the Canal du Midi - and a lovely walk to the beach at Grau d'Agde, too.  We've stayed on a site at Trebes (can't remember the name), which was between the canal and the Aude (but watch the mosquitos) but never gone further inland than this.  Sorry, not as many as I remember, but we've been to some more than once.  The old Cite de Carcassone is lovely - we found evening the best, because the crowds are less, and you can have a meal at one of the restaurants there.
