We stayed at a site in Chatelaillon Plage, south of La Rochelle, website http://www.camping-port-punay.com/
Haven't done a review yet, but will do. Has a pool, and a very good shower/toiletblock. Lovely beaches nearby, very friendly owners. It is a lot nearer La Rochelle than Royan, so don't know if this would fit the bill.

Bonne Anse Plage. We stayed there a couple of years ago and had a great holiday. It's got a pool, bars, cafes, shops crazy golf etc and can be a bit busy through the main season, but it is huge so you can pitch away from all that if you want to. It's not really my ideal site (prefer something a bit smaller) but we have no kids so we don't really need the entertainment. Close to lovely beaches and the zoo is brilliant.
Also they don't take bookings so just turn up.

Hope they have space for you, it is, like I said, quite near La Rochelle, so that would be close enough to visit from there. Also, Ile de Re (although you have to pay to get on there, may not be worth it for a day)and Ile d'Oleron, which you don't have to pay to get on, are close enough for a daytrip.
Chatelaillon Plage itself is lovely, from the site, which is just outside there, you can walk or cycle via a path along the sea, and Chatelaillon Plage has a very long beach. When we were there in early June, they were busy putting loads more sand on the beach!! There are lots of shops, and there is also market.
