We're planning on heading down to camp in Chamonix in a couple of weeks (21 July). We were there last August when summer disappeared the the snow and sub-zero temperatures forced us to leave so we headed south to the Med coast.
While warmer it was horrible - massive campsites and all fully booked. So we ended up inland at a great site at Pont du Gard near Nimes and actually had a wonderful time.

Anyway, as the weather seems crap again this 'summer' - we're thinking having a contingency in case Chamonix is not an option (no point in awful weather).
We're a 30's couple and prefer small / quiet sites with views, relaxed atmos and preferably somewhere v french with a few quiet bars & restaurants etc.
The ideal location would be somewhere s or sw from Lyon - maybe the Ardeche??
Would be really grateful if someone could recommend something.
cheers

If you still like Chamonix try 'Les Deux Glaciers' in Les Bossons just a few miles from the town. Its in the Alan Rogers guide and was great when I last stayed, even had a bakers van delivering fresh goods each morning.
Have you thought aout heading further south into Italy? I have it on good authority once you get over the Alps and into northern Italy the weather is beautiful. We are heading here from 5th August www.campingalsole.it like you we had rotton weather in Switzerland last year and we need some sun! Incidentally we had no trouble booking even a lakeside pitch at this site.
