We are thinking of going to Paris for 3 days and then on tho the Dord/gue in France.  Have got a price from Eurocamp (cos coudn't find any campsites free as yet) but it's alot of money...as they are in shcool holidays.  what I'm asking, is has anyone been to the Dordogne..is it nice? Any warnings about the roads on the way/tips.  The site I have looked at..with vacancies ..is Paris International then Salignac.  I was a bit worried I'd miss the sea, but will have to cope with that!

you would be better posting in the camping abroad section, will get more replies. The Dordogne is wonderful

We have stayed at Les Peneyrals in Salignac for the last 6 years but with Eurocamp or Haven in their vans or tents. We go out of season (end of May begining of June) with our 3 boys and so it is cheaper to do it this way than take our own tent etc.

If have been told that going in season is a completely different experience. You can still get in the pool but you just can't swim. Saying this, Les Peneyrals has the best pool to pitch ratio I have evered seen. 200 pitches and 3 main pools plus one kiddy pool and one pool for the 5 water slides. One of the main pools is inside which was good for this year in May/June.

It is the best campsite we have ever visited and gets many repeat visitors like ourselves

The area is great with lots to see and do. The campsite is in a rural area with beautiful scenery etc.

We always drive around Paris and join the road from Paris to Brive near Oreleans. The roads are very good and very quiet when we travel.

Our 6 and 11 year olds spend a lot of time at the pool and play areas where they make lots of friends and do not miss the seaside etc. The site is very safe and they wander about on their own.

Am so glad you said that about les Penerals cos that's the one we've been offered!  The only time we've been with Eurocamp it wsa out of season but we couldn't do that this year so was a bit worried about how crwded it wd be.  Haveing said that, we llokded throught the Eurocamp borchure and Les Peneyrals didn't seem to be that big compared to some of them, and had just as many pools.  Am feeling excited now...just a bit concerned re the weather!

It will be crowded but it is a large campsite but with only 200 pitches, so better than most in high season. We had our wettest holiday in France this year, out of 6 in total. The indoor pool at Les Pens is good for this. The Eurocamp couriers at Les Pens this year are very good. The Black Duck restaurant, about 2 miles from Les Pens is recommended. When going to Sarlat there are some nice back road routes (turn left out of the campsite instead of right). Feel free to ask if you have questions.

Finger crossed weather will improve then.  Must admmit, when it IS nice in France/England I resent travelling to Spain when I can have sun nearer to home!

Dordogne is stunning. Sarlat in particular is a beautiful town. There is a campsite called 'Les Grottes du Roffey' about 5km away which we stayed at a few years ago and it was great.

If Europcamp don't have any vacancies, try "Homair". They are a French agency with tents, mobile homes etc on hundreds of campsites.

Book direct with the campsite....we have for the last two years arranging mobilehomes and will be there again late August....its has its own website for bookings and availability....it will be cheaper than through the Eurocamp etc route

Any reccomendations for eating out in the area?....bear in mind we are a family of 5..and boy do teenagers eat!!!!

You looked at Camping Soleil Plage?  Right next to the River - pool/slides not as good a Les Pens but the river is where my teenagers want to be anyway.

Good pebble beach at Vitrac - head there to arranve your canoe trip - must do a canoe trip.

Take snorkel and mask to play with the fish - wiggle your toes on te bottom and teh little ones will come to feed - and sometimes teh biger ones come to feed on teh little ones.

Hi folks, fab holida, over too soon.  Highly reccomend the Dordogne, adored it and site. V hot whilst we were there! Not so keen on Loire Valley, will use as one night stop if needed but not foreign enough for us there, or our sort of scenery.  Thanks for all your help

Dordogne is fab. Suggest the Soleil Plage as Huw said, great for teens but not noisy/chavvy.

its on here if you wish to read reviews and is very central in the dordogne between sarlat and bergerac

 

we got the rough guide to the dordogne and the food places have been great

 

though we mostly cooked on a cadac chez nous
