Off to France for a month on 4th Augsut, starting at Britanny, my choice as I wanted to go back there. Its a really beautiful place and on our last visit we had 10 days of sun. I know the weather has been a bit ropey lately but who cares, have a good holiday and as for crime we never saw any or experienced any.

Hi

Not posted on here for absolutely ages but saw your post and could sympathise with your worries. We got back from Brittany yesterday and had beautiful weather. Yes it rained every night and a couple of evenings too but we had glorious sunshine everyday and all came back nice and tanned. Like you I was really worried about the weather being a wash out especially with 3 kids to keep amused and every internet forecast I looked at was doom & gloom-all I can say is they were all wrong. Brittany is filled with lovely people, scenery, beaches, old towns and villages-I wish we were still there and hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Julie

Hi

We are also just back from Brittany and it was our first time too. A totally different holiday for us . I was also nervous  about lots of little things. It was brilliant!! Yes weather was a little mixed but on the whole good . However even if weather is not great it is better being there visiting different places and on holiday eating great food and drinking great wine!!

Have a fantastic time. Advice on here is great and reading posts really helped us with our planning and preparation, so thanks for that...

Enjoy,  it's an adventure!!

Wooohooo me too, we are off on Thursday - I think I've got everything ready!

Oh, remember to take important telephone numbers with you too - such as your credit card for lost & stolen, insurance etc.

We are currently staying at L'Orangerie de Lanniron in Quimper. Fantastic site, but the weather is a bit iffy. Nice and warm, but have had some pretty heavy rain. Hasn't stopped us getting out and about though, and we have tried to drag our little one (3) away from the sandpit several times, but I think she is stuck there for the holiday - whatever the weather! Brittany is a fantastic place - good choice everyone. Have a great holiday!!

Hi - in 26 years of travelling to France we have NEVER EVER had a bad holiday and apart from one incident 19 years ago, when I stupidly left cash on the bed in my tent, have never been robbed.  We've slept on the autoroute service areas, with no problems, and even enjoyed free showers, and one time a free breakfast.

In France campsites are lovely, food is better, wine is cheaper, roads are quieter, you hardly ever pay for parking, amazing sites are free of charge, beaches are great, restaurants in the resorts, country hotels and even supermarkets serve fantastic cheap food, supermarkets have more variety and better food, markets are stunning, the bread tastes like bread not sponge, the weather is (generally) better - but even if it isn't, it's 'different', and I'm sure you'll have a great time - sounds as if you need it.

When you come off the ferry, TAKE YOUR TIME, relax - not too much and enjoy. Demand peace and tranquillity in the car for the first 20 miles or so in order that you can get your act together without any distractions.

The roads are fantastic and relatively uncrowded.

Most of the big provincial towns have a ring road(periphique)which makes life easier but you do have to be alert on this to ensure you take the correct exit.

You will find that the signposting shows places some distance away so have your distant route points ready. For instance you get a sign in Caen directing you to Rennes and when you get to Rennes you get signs for St Nazaire and L'Orient. Be sure you know which one you want to go to because on the coast these two ports are well over 100 miles apart.

Once you get used to this, driving in France is a doddle and as for the rest of it, well you're in for a big treat.

BTW, good on yer for being concerned........

Cheers!

Vic

Thanks Vic.

All packed up and ready to be on our way in the morning.

Congratualting ourselves on how empty the car is.

Hope that doesn't mean we have left important things behind.

Oh well too late now. Thanks for your encouraging comments. Will make sure we have a quiet car like suggested - good tip!
