Our 2.0 litre Mondeo estate had four bikes on the roof rack (one solo, three tandems), three more bikes on the back rack, two adults, two kids and a full load of camping gear in the car PLUS was towing a 450Kg trailer tent yesterday, on the way home to Edinburgh after a five week round trip to France. Performed faultlessly throughout.

But if you`re worried about your Golf, why not consult the handbook for the maximum permissible loads for your model? (The average adult bike with no suspension weighs around 16Kg, btw.)

We have got a 1.9 skoda Octavia it takes dog , bikes, chairs, tables, picnic table and assorted very essential bits (well to me they are) also hubbys says to mention my handbag which he calls the toolbox also a proper toolbox in the boot and trolley jack, plastic box of boots and coats (must be prepared in this country). 2 adults and on the back 5.5m of Lunar Delta twin axle pulls it no problem goin to France in 6 weeks so more may have to be loaded in car.

I have a 2l golf, 2 adults, 2 kids, roof box and car crammed to the gills. No space at all. My tent is a 12man and weighs a ton. No bikes though. The only time the Golf struggled was going up mountains and even then it just meant that I couldn't overtake going up hill!

My car is an M reg with 160k on the clock if that helps. Last year when I loaded the car it was pretty low....this year we have had the suspension fixed. It still made it into Switzerland and across the Auvergne with no problems.

I reckon you should be fine. Take the bikes. I am thinking of doing it next year!

If the bikes are on the roof remember not to go through the 'low' peage toll.
