I am considering whether or not to take the caravan to Iceland in summer 2008. I would appreciate any info from anyone who has done this, i.e. are there many sites, what are they like, where can I find info about campsites, etc. How easy is it to get to Iceland, the only route I can find at present is on Smyril Line from Scotland to Iceland via The Faroe Islands. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

I did it about 12 years ago then there were very few campsites but I suspect things have changed as Iceland seems very popular now. We went for a month I think anything less is unrealistic in view of the distances need to see it all
I did it in a tent as we went in a 1928 Bullnose Morris (it was a challenge, don't ask)but we also stayed in a few hotels. Roads are mainly gravel tracks outside the towns as they are frozen for 8 months of the year and the attractions are very few and far between but well worth it. I think these days you would do better to take a package deal rather than do it yourself in a Motorhome and let someone else do the work.
The Smyril Line is the only way to go I believe it now goes from Scrabster (you used to have to go to Shetland first).
I'm off to find the photos of our trip now as you've reminded me.
Thanks for the info, I still need to weigh up whether the cost and the long drive from SE England up to North Scotland are worth it, maybe a trip to Iceland without the caravan might be easier.

Make sure to take some freezer bags, they've got some really good deals on at the moment. I found the easiset way to get there is by car along the gosport road, free parkling in Stubbington and we can be there and back in half an hour so no need for tent, caravan etc
