It's true.  My OH was not impressed but bought some cheap trunks from Matalan before we left for France.  You could also get some from your local sports shop.

If you really hate them try this...................

Wear trunks under your shorts and just take shorts off to swim putting shorts back on to sunbathe:  that's wot loads of men seemed to do at the place we stayed!

It's true on French sites - don't know about Belgium.   It applies all over France, and on some sites they are very strict about enforcing it, on others they don't bother.  You should be able to buy them at any Sports Shop - and the campsite shop may sell them (at a cost).  French supermarkets also sell them.  My other half bought a new pair in the M and S sale last weekend (just in case - but he has got used to wearing them, after many years at sites which enforce the rules!!)

Yes it is the case that in a lot of European pools proper trunks are required and loose swim shorts are not allowed. It is for hygiene reasons as shorts are more likely to pick up more dirt and there tends to be less chlorine in european pools. In many cases you are also expected to shower before entering the pool.

Quite a lot of places stock proper trunks as swim shorts are often not allowed in school pools either - try Next or M&S or sports shops.

Enjoy your holiday.

You can wear the close fitting lycra swim shorts as well, you don't have to wear speedos or swim thongs ;-) Just not big baggy shorts.

I imagine the 'hygiene' factor arises because shorts can be worn all day, day after day - and could potentially be in an unhygienic state when you enter the pool!

However, specific 'swimming' trunks are something you only put on to swim, or sunbathe and not something you might've been wearing for extended periods.  That's why I think the French prefer to see clothing that's only possible use is for swimming.

- Well, that's how I see it.

I've been to France 4 times now, all at different sites in different partsof France. Only once did I wear lycra trunks - yes I was the stipid pale englishman in tight shorts on his first trip to France. Most other blokes wore beach shorts, and ever since that first fateful day, so have I!

Just returned from 3 weeks in France. One of our stopovers had a pool and our main 2 weeks site had 3 big pools and we didn't have to wear the speedos. I did hear that some sites in France made you wear them but thought it was a 'mickey take'!!

Bought mine from M&S, i bought the short type rather than brief style, miss's wet herself when i put them on LOL you cannot hide the beer belly in those things.

When we got to the site in Millau the owners did mention about shorts not allowed!

We.ve just got back from 2 weeks in France, at the first site in the Loire swim shorts were allowed but a the other 2, one near Royan and the other near Le Harve both enforced trunks.

I got mine from JJB Sports before we went away!!

My OH got his from Go Sport store in France ( they've got a sale on at the mo... we just got back). They were really cheap shop brand, black and sort of look like a tight pair of hot pants!

We've just got back. All the sites insisted on the lycra style shorts. One didn't enforce it too rigorously but at our main site they evicted a man who was paddling in the baby pool with his toddler. OH wears his under his normal shorts and takes them off when he's going for a swim. Non of us are allowed to mention them though and definately no photos! Claire
