Does anyone know of a cheap hotel chain like Travelodge, in Brittany.  I've noticed Fomule 1 mentioned here, but we have three children, and most places only allow a max of 2 children.  Hence the camping (no restrictions on number of children in my own tent - though I might introduce it). Anyone know of any clever way to avoid being charged for two rooms? It would only be for the odd night, just in case of prolonged rain etc.

Cant think of anywhere that sleeps 5 but you could try Hotel B&B. Some of their rooms have Mezzanines (sp!) and if one of your youngsters is a little un they may let you book one room. Nice hotel chain. We have used the Calais one and it was clean and neat with secure parking. You will find a list of French hotel chains at www.eurapart.com which might help you with your search.

We used a BB last year with our 3. Our youngest was only 2 and she slept in our bed. TEchnically I think you could get away with it with an older child if two of yours share, as we never saw a member of staff the whole time we were there, apart from at breakfast.

This year we are staying at a Formule 1, we wanted to all have our own beds this year so hubby and the boys are in a 3 bed room, me and my daughter in a two bed room. Including breakfast it's costing us E85, so about 60 quid, which for 2 rooms and breakfast I think is blooming good value.

Probably because she's got her own tent. £800 for 10 days is extortionate if you have your own tent, we are doing 2 weeks in France for a lot less than that including Eurotunnel, campstie, fuel, tolls and insurance. The pre-erected tents are great if you don't have your own, but not a particularly cost effective option when you have your own tent.

This is a useful website with links to many of the budget hotel chains http://www.eurapart.com/budget.html - and on the front page shows room capacity.  There appears to be only one sleeping more than 4 - and unfortunately the nearest is Le Havre.  However, some small french hotels have family rooms which will sleep up to 5 or 6 - and the price is sometimes surprisingly low by British standards.  Have a look at Logis de France - or on the Gites de France website - or even on mappy.com or viamichelin which allows you to link to hotels in the area where you're staying.

Cool, thanks everyone. The pre-erected tent idea is great if you want a base, but you have to book whole weeks in peak season at least.  We are taking our spare tent and then leaving it at my Aunts - in anticipation of future invites and cheap holidays! I shall upload all the website suggestions and take them with me - never quite know where we are going to end up - best way eh?

Why do you need a hotel at all if you have got a decent tent it should be fine in the rain.    If you do decide that a hotel is the only option we stayed in a lovely hotel a few years ago on the outskirts of Paris when we visited disneyland - we had the same problem as we have 3 sons but this hotel had rooms for 2 adults plus 3 children. The hotel was the Mercure in Lognes - I think the Mercure chain have hotels all over France.

If you can speak some French you might have more luck booking direct as lots of French families have 3 children so there must be more hotels that can accommodate them.

B+B do have family rooms that will take 5, but not all rooms are like this - they are the mezzanine rooms that somebody mentioned. B&B here.
The Accor chain has the Formule 1, Etap, Ibis, Mercure, Novotel and Sofitel. Accor here.
The Louvre hotels chain has the Kyriad, Campanile, Concorde & Prestige. Louvre here.

Must admit it is a lot easier getting a room for 3 than 5 though!

Just as an aside, budget hotels on the continent are much better value than the Travelbodge type sheds we have here in the UK - they are such a rip off.

Another good "chain" for here and abroad is the
Best Western - these vary in price from cheap to "How Much?"

Expedia also throws us a couple of gems now and again.

Thanks everyone, ukcampsite members are a mine of information! Will let you know how it all pans out.  By the way, the weather has been annoyingly wet here in Brittany - not all the time, but enough to have to drag extra clothing everywhere....

I want a summer!
