Have a look here ,  www.campingsolmar.com ,in the costa brava ,we go here every year though we cheat and hire a lodge and book cheap flights , so cant help you with the travelling ,however next year we are planning to tow a caravan over and have it permanently pitched there , they take care of winter storage ,security cleaning ect all included in the yearly site fees , its a great site, 5 mins from beach and it has a fantastic swimming pool .huge market along the port on a mon ,there s also markets on in near by resorts which are very easily reached by a very good public bus service .

Get the Mrs to drive the kids down from calais but you fly and have a couple of days to relax before the family arrives

We fancied Spain last year and priced the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander.................OUTRAGEOUS ! !  We stuck with Dover-Dunkerque and toured France (again) instead.

Depending on how long you've got you could always opt for the cheaper crossing and take a few days to make your way to Spain and same on the way back.

 Hi Deb

This site looks great for us (3 teens) and would like to know more. Where do you fly to and how far is it from the airport? Do you need to hir a car when you are there or does the site arrange transfers?

Thanks

Pam

we book our lodge through a company called cantabrica who do coach holidays there , we book flights to gerona airport  through ryanair ,(keep checking thier website for the cheap flights ) its only 30 mins from the site and costs around £35 for a taxi , reception  will book a taxi for your return, the campsite itself has many accomodations to rent directly also as you can see on thier website ,and very reasonable too ,you dont need to hire a car as everything is on the doorstep, there s even a  train station in the town which you can hop on to barcelona , good bus  service to , loret de mar (which is the resort next door )tossa de mar , callela ,i could go on and on ....... we just got back a couple of weeks ago and had beautiful hot sunshine every day  ,

i know its not the same as taking your own caravan but for comparison we paid £197 for flights ,£500 for 2 weeks accomodation and £70 for taxi transfers ! cheaper than towing your own which is why we are planning on taking a caravan down and leaving it on a permanent pitch , then we can just get cheap flights over whenever we want  and use our tent  if we fancy a weekend break here .

We went to Castell Montgris at Estartit a couple of years ago, on the Costa Brava so only just into Spain.

We had one overnight stop at Gigny-sur-Saone but it was still quite a journey.

However, if you cross from Portsmouth to Le Havre with Ld lines - half the price of Brittany Ferries, they only do one crossing a day at 11 pm and you dock at 8am so chance to sleep but we did that crossing this year and would recommend a cabin if you can run to it as the  standard seats don't recline too far. Having said that they had better recliners but we didn't book those as we thought we'd be ok. It would be worth looking on their web site and checking the prices.

Back to the campsite, Good points were lots of pools, the main one open till midnight and it was huge - in fact said to be one of the largest free formed pools in Europe. The on-site shop was the best I have ever seen with a huge range of items including lots of fresh fruit and veg but there is a LIDL almost opposite the site.

Plenty of toilets and showers so despite the size of the site no-one had to queue and as far as I remember I didn't have a problem with the cleanliness. It was quite a busy site but I like that so that wasn't a problem for me either.

Bad points, we stayed in a Eurocamp tent and the pitch was very small, and crazy paved.

The site is set on the slopes of a small mountain and is therefore quite steep in places though from what I could tell the tent/caravan pitches were at the bottom on flat ground and presumably don't have the paving. The town is within walking distance and there was a market there though I can't remember what day it was on. Have a look on the Eurocamp website to get the full run down.

Fiona

Try Las Dunas in the Bay of Roses on the Costa Brava, we enjoyed it but be prepared to book early.

I am going to Europe, Spain for the first time next year. We are going to book with select-site as it is our first time and it will take some of the challenges away.

However I was going to drive down the other route and stop over at Motaubon/Toulouse. You seem to driven downt he dijon/Lyon way. Just wondering why.
