Hi all,

Has anyone been to either La Paille Basse or Chateau le Verdoyer in the Dordogne this year? Any comments would be welcome as they are both on the list of possibles for next year. We have three boys who will be aged between 9 and 13 next year so there would need to be enough for them to do plus the usual fishing/canoeing etc. Thanks.

Susie

Just bumping this back to the top.  Chateau du Verdoyer is quite a way from the main 'Dordogne' river,  but a lovely site in itself.   If you want to be nearer to the river than Paille Basse is a better bet.

left Verdoyer after 2 days due to awful weather, personally we found the site a little remote, a long drive to the main Dordogne sites. Plus Paille Basse is a Castels site, always a good sign IMO

There's a previous posting on here to say that they chose to leave Verdoyer after only a couple of days because they didn't rate it, the staff were unhelpful, etc. See this posting for more information http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=7&TopicID=123057&PagePosition=2

that was us Val, please bare in mind that was just our opinion mainly based on the rubbish weather which put a dampner on our mood. Another UKCS member was there at the same time and they liked it.

Went to Paille Basse 2 years ago. My memories are probably also coloured by the weather (2 visits to the Dordogne, twice it has done nothing other than rain or be overcast). It was OK. Not a great deal to do. The pool wasn't bad and they showed films in the cinema but that was all I remember. We also had trouble with a load of youths wandering around creating havoc at night for the last 2 nights. Nothing done about it. The last night they smashed up an old metal plane that was there for kids to play in.

We couldn't get to eat in the restaurant as you have to reserve in advance (great when you only stop for 3 nights) Take away was ok but quite a queue. You can order roast chicken 24 hours in advance.

I personally won't be going back. It is in the middle of nowhere. This year we stayed near Rocamadour at le Ventouloulou which was lovely. Very child friendly with a kiddie sized loo, sink and shower room. They got ponies in to ride. Avoid the themed evening of local food unless you like playing party games though...

Thanks guys for the replies - it doesn't sound like either site would be right but at least that means I can cross them off the list. In fact I think we will probably return to the site we went to this year in the Vendee, although I am normally one for trying new places each year, as we just had such a lovely holiday and took an option on a pitch for next year before we left. It feels a little unadventurous doing this but we do like to stay put for two weeks so I am worried about ending up on a site we don't like, in peak season, with nowhere else to go.

Susie

I have paille basse, my kids were 6, 10 and 12, our daughter fell off her bike on the gravel road and had about 20 stiches scarred her knee for life, however not the sites fault.

Thought the site was okay, but didnt like the fact that the slides are seperate from the main pool, a bit of a pain having to leave the pool and walk to the slides.

There was quite a lot of "yoofs" about but saw no trouble or excess noise.

Found the site quite spread out and apart from the nice view and the rustic buildings it was simply just okay nothing more nothing less.
