I know it is a very long drive but we stay in an apartment in Roquetas de mar, Almeria, Spain  every winter and the big car parks on the sea front are full of vans from uk, germany etc it is totally free and very safe, as all the vans park together, they all seem very friendly when we stop and chat to them, there are places where you can empty your van (the waste tanks) and water taps, it is still very spanish in Roquetas, it is walking distance to shops, supermarkets etc, a great place to stay,  most people can speak english if you get stuck. It is literally steps from the beach, but really quiet.  We keep meaning to drive there, but the flights and apartments are so cheap and diesel is so damn dear now that we can't justify driving, though I know you can tour around and see so much in  a van.

just a suggestion!

This one is open  http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5283 and most of the British owned sites are open.   If you go through the sites in France mentioned in the campsite search here you will find out which ones are open all year
