We crossed Dover/Calais in July with sea france. £ 170 for tt car and 2 adults. Around 1 hour crossing time. There are other crossings which will take you further south, but are much more expensive. You'll love france. Its made for camping/caravaning.
We crossed Folkestone - Calais with the Shuttle mid August - £198 for car TT and as many people as we wanted to cram into the car (although actually it was just the 4 of us!)
ive done the shuttle and ferry this year, and i think if the price is right the shuttle saves a lot of waiting around,
we got to a site in antwerp to late to book in,by ferry if we had been on the shuttle we would have been ok,45 min wait to board the ferry,1hr crossing,20 mins to hit the road.....grrr

Raguenes Plage is a lovely site, as is Le Kervilor and La Baie in Trinite Sur Mer, Concarneau is lovely. If you don't mind paying the £400 or so more, a Portsmouth to Caen or St Malo, or Plymrouth to Roscoff, brings you within a very short drive of these places. It all depends on how much driving you want to do on the other side. For us the shorther drive the better in France, but lots of others don't mind driving long distances in France. We always do an overnight crossing too which does bump up the price but it's all part of our holiday.
