Debby - there are loads of sites around Dijon where you can stay for just one night.  The municipal in Beaune is a good one, and highly recommended by others on this website (but try to get there early in high season), there are municipal sites at St Seine l'Abbey just north of Dijon, and there's a municipal in Dijon itself.   Many french towns and villages have their own municipal site, so you really should have no problem just turning up at the next place on your route.  There's usually no need to book - but don't leave it too late in the afternoon to find a pitch.

Get the Michelin campsite guide which lists all types of sites - or join the Caravan Club and get their Europe Camping 1 guide, which has loads of sites in Europe - listing those which are suitable for overnight stops.

We normally don't bother to camp for just one night as we think it all too much hassle, so we just book in to one of the cheap chain hotels. Villages, or Accor are only £30 for the one night and will sleep 3. We dispense with their brakfast, just have a quick drink, and stop on the Auto route for a later breakfast.
This may not be an option if the costs mount up though.
Cheers,
Jim.

Debs,hi,when southbound (or northbound) we use to use the municipals at Beaune and Macon both easy to get to, its much better than overnighting on the Aires on the autoroute (A6) Where in the Med are you thinking of going to regards S/C

Debby,

To the south of Dijon is a huge industrial/retail area, with lots of hotels that are reasonably priced. We stayed at Villages, slept 3, double with a bunk bed over the top. Basic room, 38 euros(£28.00) own en-suite. Secure locked car park. Next door to McDonalds & a huge LeClerc with a restaurant. It is right on the main auto route going south.

If you want some more details about exactly where it is, then just ask & I'll find them.

Debby - if you're going to the Languedoc then I'd say you're better off not going down through Dijon and the Rhone Valley, but using the free A75 motorway through Clermont Ferrand.  Similarly there are plenty of campsites around Clermont Ferrand, or plenty of  budget hotels.

I agree with the above.
Formule 1 are cheap, but they do not have ensuite facilities and have very small rooms.
Jim.

Debby, Sorry for the delay in replying!

Here is where we stayed

http://www.hotel-bb.com/detailhotels.phtml?hotelid=0162

There are lots of other hotels around here, but this one & BB hotel in the same area( just around the corner) have secured locked car parks, which can be piece of mind when the car is stuffed to gills with all your equipment etc.

BB hotel is more expensive, but you can get family rooms to sleep 4, and not 3 like in Villages.

Anything else then just ask!

Debby - here's a link to most of the budget hotels in France - so you can get information for the area you decided on.  http://www.eurapart.com/budget.html

If you do go down the A75 (which is a beautiful road) then you'll also get to cross the Millau viaduct - which is a sight worth seeing.
