Greetings
Apologies for the length.
A word of caution to all those of you who go on holiday out of the country, (and this particularly applies to those of us that go away for a month or more.)
Should you leave for the holiday in the month preceding the expiry of your cars VEL and before the reminder is sent out to you (usually on the 15th day preceding the expiry) BEWARE.
The only way you can get another VEL is neither straightforward, simple or efficient.
You can apply ‘online’ but the DVLA will only post your new VEL to the address on your Registration Document. That’s not a lot of good if, like us, you live alone with noone to post it on to you at your address abroad and lets’ face it. Who would risk doing that anyway.
The alternatives are not much better. You can apply in person at a DVLA Office. In my case that involves a round trip of 80miles. You could also apply in person at a designated Post Office. In my circumstances that involves a round trip of 40miles, a toll bridge and parking charges in Plymouth city centre.
The only ‘sensible’ method I could suggest, other than risking driving without a current VEL on your return (and with the proliferation of No. Plate recognition cameras installed, who would risk?) is to surrender for VEL on the last day of the month preceding the one in which your disc runs out and then immediately apply for a new VEL to start on the following day. Oh, and if you do that here’s a tip. Get the postmaster in the Post Office to date stamp your application for surrender with his date stamp on the back of the envelope. That way DVLA can’t say you posted it too late to get your money back.
Happy Holidays!!!
