Can anyone tell me how busy the big campsites are in June? I've just been given my holidays for next summer and I'm going to have to go mid June. Either that or two single weeks in July... Great!!  Went to Ty Nadan( Castel site)  last year in August and daughter loved it. She wants to go back. We are going to take her out of school but will there be any other children there for her to play with?

Only plus is that it will be cheaper!

Many thanks

Paul

French campsites in June are fine. There will be plenty of other families present taking advantage of the cheaper prices.

Fewer families are now willing to take children out of school than was the case in the past.  We've been on sites in June where we've been the only British people there (and we're an 'almost' retired couple now).   There may be a few Scottish families towards the end of June - and probably more Dutch children (who often speak good English anyway).

What age is your daughter?  Has she any friends whose family may also allow 'removal' from school - that's how we got around the problem of no other children.  I admit to taking both my sons out of school until they reached 13 - and the eldest got a Masters Degree (a First) at Bristol, and is now teaching up to A level, so it doesn't seem to have affected his education!  We always used to take friends with us to make sure they had someone else to play with.

It will certainly be cheaper - site fees can be half of peak prices in June.  Generally it's a good time in terms of weather, too - and roads are quieter, site facilities less stretched, and restaurants not fully booked - so you'll have a great time.

June is almost the best month to go to France as campsites will not be full and you have a good chance that the weather will be kind.

Been twice in mid June and found France to be very quiet and the sites have plenty of availability.  L'escale in the Le Grand Bornand was busy only because they had given up their rally site to mobile homes and moved the rally onto the main site thus taking up 40 odd pitches, but had that not been the case it would have been half empty.

Hi Paul   We are retired and go to France for May and June every year. We find it depends on the site on how busy it is, and how far south you go. We go to a Castel site in tha Dordogne every year and it gets the best pitches full for most of June, but you can still get a pitch. We find that the site is made up of Dutch and British but very few Children. The Children start to arrive early July and are mainly French.

We always went in June when the children were small, we used Keycamp / Canvas in those days, usually found the sites were about 50% occupied, always seemed to be plenty of Irish familes around, being Brittany / Vendee - I think they get extra long summer breaks. Also found, especially futher west, that it stayed light until about 11pm

Thanks for the replies. My daughter is 11 and will be finishing primary school at the end of June so not much work will be done anyway. It would be the last time I would take her out of school as she starts " big " school in September.

She mixes well and last year met a girl from Wales who she still keeps in touch with via the internet. The Ty Nadan site  is full of activities for us to do together but she likes a little bit of freedom in the evening to mix with other kids.

No alternative really as my work has changed how they allocate the holidays. Length of service no longer counts and they drew names out of a hat which no one actually seen! A lot of unhappy workmates at the moment, some didnt get allocated any summer holidays.

I would agree that you may find regular sites a bit quiet, but go to sites where the big UK operators have set up their operations, and you have a better chance of finding your daughter some companions also missing school. The Keycamp/Eurocamp type prices are often irresistable in low season for parents, compared with school holiday time.

June is our favourite time to go to France, try the west coast around Royan, that would be my tip

Weve always found the larger sites have plenty of children around despite them being relatively quiet ( compared with mid august when its packed for example)

Northn Irelands school holidays start at the end of June so you may find quite a few families from NI over there in the last two weeks of June( right before the operators put their prices up for NI despartures!)

Hi,

We've never had a problem on sites in June, in my experience they only tend to get busy mid July to end of August but even then we've never had to book.

If your daughter mixes well she'll be fine. We've never been all that successful at finding sites with loads of other English kids for our son but he has always found someone to play with and is still in touch with most of them on MSN. Last year, when he was 13, he met up with a group of mostly Dutch kids and wheedled us into going back this year too. The gang was waiting at the gate for him when we arrived! Guess what, we're going back next year too.

Liz
