Hi,

My husband and I gave up a 'normal' life in May 2006 and since have been travelling in our motorhome around France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. We found France to be fantastic for aires, Portugal and Italy also great for free camping however we were disappointed with Spain. We found that unless you stay on a campsite for 30+ days the costs are expensive, with regards to free camping we found that on occasion even when we stopped for lunch by the sea the police would stop and move us on! It is apparently illegal to free camp in Spain and the police so enforce this law. Apart from this we did find excellent sites in South Spain which were beautiful and which we will definitely visit again in the future.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Jo

I have "wild camped" down near Tarifa for more years than I would care to remember. The big towns and their Police get pretty stressed during the season so maybe that's why you have had trouble in Spain. Most of the people who "full time" head for the hills in the summer months

thanks for the info t6 ; alas we can t  give up normality full time, we figure we can do three months at a time. was it near big towns that you had your hassle like happybonzo reckoned. it would be nice to stay by the sea occasionally !! i notice your location is burton ; i m just down the A38 in tamworth, so it is a small world like they say

Up until a couple of years ago there was no problem with 'on road' overnight parking in Spain whilst passing through towns. We did this for many years. Then you got the huge motorhomes taking up 3 parking places and parking lengthways across the road. Worse still when the occupants get their table and chairs out and awnings and decide to stay for more than one night. Mostly G.B. number plates !!
Now us folk that have vans small enough to properly fit into a bay and only stay one night have been barred from doing so. A big 'Thank you' to those inconsiderate rude people !!

Hi,

In response to my previous post, we didn't really attempt wild camping in Spain much after our initial attempt but no when we did do it it was in small villages and not large towns. It was in November too so high season wasn't an issue. We only have a small motorhome so space wasn't an issue either. We have wild camped in south Spain and had a lovely time, maybe we were just unlucky!

As I also mentioned we had an amazing time in France, Italy and Portugal, the majority of the time wild camping. The rule we keep to is leave the place cleaner than you found it and you should have no problems.

Yes James, we're in Burton until the end of Jan while we catch up with family and friends then off for our job in south France till November. It is a small world.

Take care and happy travelling
