Glad to hear the donkey is still making it's prescence felt. It seemed to be right behind our tent most mornings!!
We also liked the look of Le Capeyrou when seen from the chateau, but decided that we didn't want to go through the horrendous traffic of Beynac regularly. Also appeared to be a very dusty site, but that was in 2001.
For the last 3 years we have stayed at La Riviere in Les Eyzies. This has been in July around Bastille Day or the week after. Handy for the river and town (10-15 minute walk along the riverbank). Come through the town past the train station and over the river and just on the left by the little garage. The staff are wonderful. We had a problem with our trailer tent last year and they were superb, helped us out, rang people for us and let us stay an extra night whilst we got things sorted. We are going again this year. It has a small pool, no slides, some kids entertainment in the afternoon and a superb restaurant/takeaway. Mainly Dutch and French, few English.

For last 3 years we have gone in July rather than August so don't know what the weather has been like first hand in the area. Les Eyzies had a fantastic disco and firework display for Bastille Day last year. Didn't plan it put met up with some friends who live there and had a great time. Loads of caves, museums and parks for kids and adults alike in the area.
