Thinking of taking family away between Boxing Day & New Years Day 2008/2009.  Maybe France and looking to take 4 wheel drive.  Prob stay at cottage or appartment or hotel. Would like wintery snow but no need to ski ourselves.  Not too much snow that we cant get there in car, Any ideas of resorts etc?

Unfortunately the snow at that time of year can be very unpredictable - winter 2006/2007 there was very little snow around at Christmas except in the very high and usually less attractive resorts. I prefer Switzerland myself but in the French Alps La Clusaz is a pretty little resort or you could go for a larger town like Chamonix as there would be plenty to do.

You would want somewhere like this in Austria, it is on the Italy/Swiss/Austrian border and you can ski into Samnaun which is a tax free principality.  More importantly, it is a high area with several glaciers in the vicinity including the Kaunertal.  Lovely toll road up to the glacier btw, wonderful scenery.  I love this part of Austria.

Alternatively Kaprun as again you have a glacier nearby - the Kitzsteinhorn

Aim for somewhere that is more than 2000 metres high, places like Kitzbuhel, Westendorf, Soll etc miss the snow in a bad winter.
