We are planning a trip to Portiragnes-Plage in the South of France in July, travelling from Dover to Calais towing a caravan. We have travelled in France a few times but never this distance or having an overnight stop. The distance is approx 650 miles from Calais and my orriginal plan is to get an early start and do most of the journey before stopping overnight. I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a place to stop overnight and whether i need to pre-book. I have previously avoided stopping overnight before because it seemed to be a lot of hassle, but now wishing to travel to the south its something i will have to try. Any advice on how to make an overnight stop as simple as possible or best route would also be apprecited.
Thanks in advance
Andy
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
My suggestion would be to print a copy of the "Campings near the Highway" page for the route you wish to take, then pick out 3 or 4 towns down the road on your route. You could estimate how far you will get in the first day, say 400, 450, 500 miles and look for sites around those points. Then when you are feeling like you only want to do another hour or so, phone ahead to the next campsite to ask if they have a pitch. We find most campsites will have space for an extra 'van if you are only staying overnight, especially if you can manage without a hook-up. Otherwise, just stop by 4pm and you should get on somewhere easily for an overnight stop.
dont be tempted to stop overnight on an aires or motorway
serv its not worth it plan your trip build in stay at campsite, we are in benidorm camping and have met two couples who were robbed in there sleep one at an aire and one on motorway serv in france friendly warning
