We like the idea of taking an overnight ferry with a cabin for our journey to Bavaria/Austrian border this August, so hubby can drive refreshed for 300 miles or so before our first stopover. I have been looking at the messages on the board and no-one seems to mention this ferry, preferring links to Calais and Belgium. Is this route not very popular for southern Germany? Is it better/easier to go via Calais or Belgium? Any help for us newbies would be much appreciated!!

I think at one time they went completely over to Seacats, which didn't take caravans - we've used it once and it was a fine crossing. We've also been on the Seacat without the caravan and the return journey was dreadful due to seasickness.
it's a good crossing - and the Hook isn't far from the motorway links through the Netherlands to Germany
only downside - as someone has already said - is the journey to Harwich is not that convenient for a lot of the country.

But itīs all right now, I learned my lesson well.

Its only 17 miles from where we live & yet We find its cheaper to drive to Dover, cross to Dunkerque & drive to Holland--its very expensive-& the fast catamaran(3hrs 40mins crossing) is not on the route anymore--so you have the ferry-8hrs--last time I looked it was over Ģ200 return for just a car & cabin was extra-they do a cheap deal for caravans but its on the day crossing--the route mainly exists as a freight route--if you live in Herts you would probably be better going Dover/Dunkerque with Norfolk line--if your going to sth Germany it aint that much further-less than 150miles-I would have thought--
We have used it once on the fast ferry and it was good. Using it this year, because we saved our Tesco vouchers to go Hull/Rotterdam but can't use them now
We find the journey better than going to Dover from the north and you can park there over night or when you get back. We are still undecided whether to go on the day or night ferry. They actually quote 6hr15min.
The crossing is good, the cabins are good and the ticket includes a meal and a drink at the bar. The ships are great. I've used it a couple of times. I would say that the jourmey from the M25 is not that different than the journey to Dover. The A12 can have its problems (just like the M2 or M20) but is a nice piece of road.
Sassy25, I see you are in Hertfordshire, the A120 from Stanstead to Colchester is great, you'll be at Harwich in no time.

I'm now on plan D for next year - had planned Hull-Zeebrugge to get, eventually to Lyon. However, have just noticed that the week before our planned journey we'll be in Suffolk not far from Harwich .... seems no point in coming back to Yorkshire ...
However, seems counterintuitive to go via Holland to get to eastern France .... has anyone travelled this route?

Hook of Holland to Lyon 560miles, easy drive, all motorway, no toll until you reach France, down thru Antwerp, Brussels, Luxembourg, etc.
Alternatively drive to Dover or Eurotunnel about 130miles from Ipswich for a cheaper crossing(but more toll)& about 470miles to Lyon.
Thanks Art - now I've found my Atlas Zeebrugge and Hook seem about the same distances. So with a couple of overnights that should be a nice journey .....
[The whole point of the ferries is to avoid the drive from Sheffield - we did Calais-Sheffield last year and the wife says, 'Never again!' (and she's the driver ...) and we avoid the M11/M25/M20 and so forth ... ]

We used our tesco vouchers and hook of holland was only 30 minutes from our dutch campsite. The journey to harwich wasn't that bad from north wales. It is really good waking up really fresh on the start to your holiday.
