We are having a change from the Vendee this year and are thinking of visiting friends in Southern Germany who live near Stuttgart. Anyone any experiences of campsites in the area. We have two boys, 8 and 4, who like swimming, so a pool is a must. Also, from experience we have enjoyed campsites on/near rivers. Not many in the directory..

Black Forest campsites? (I spent an enjoyable few days on a motorbike through the forest quite a few years ago but that was before the family!)

Do the Germans have a municipal system similar to France?

Also we might fit in a visit to Disneyland paris on the way home - any one any good tips?

Alan

For a stopover at Disney, I'd recommend La Croix du Vieux Pont - which runs it's own excursions, and is also a very nice campsite, with good facilities, including an indoor pool.  It's not the nearest to Disney - but does have good reviews from people who've stayed there.

It's years since we were in Germany, and I can't remember some of the sites we stayed at, but remember them all being of a good standard, with excellent sanitary facilities (compared to the sort of English sites we were staying on at the time!!).  We stayed near Trier, Koblenz, Heidelburg, Baden Baden - each for a couple of days, and then Frieburg, then four nights at Lake Constance - which was lovely.  There are loads of campsites around the lake - and we had a lakeside pitch, with the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen.  Sorry not to be able to give you particular site names - but hope this helps.  Wouldn't recommend the 'municipal' (town campsite) in Munich at beer festival time, though, which was our only mistake.  We woke to find someone had pitched their tent right outside the door of our hired motorhome, and were unwakeable in the morning!!

Thanks Val - we don't have to be too close to disney so your recommendation sound good to investigate. My friend in Germany has also recommended Lake Constance - I remember it stopping over there in my bike days. Very nice place  - so another strong possibility.

Time to go site hunting!!

Alan
