Can anyone recommend a site for an overnight stop nr Calais (within say 20mins/half hour drive of tunnel).  We will be travelling up from the Vendee and prob arriving about 5/6pm.  It would be helpful if the site had a bit of a restaurant then we don't have to start searching for somewhere for tea!  We'll have 3 caravans with a couple of children in each so a playground would also be an advantage (but not vital).

Thanks

I would have thought that Le Bien Assise at Guines would be an ideal stop over for you given the direction of onward travel and its less than 10 miles from the Tunnel. This forum has an excellent search facility for French campsites by region so apart from the site I have mentioned it will no doubt have a lot more.

I would also recommend La Bien Assise.  We stayed there both ways last years for an overnight (and I must book a night there for this summer as well).  It's not more than 20 mins from Calais docks and closer to the Tunnel. It's a lovely site in its own right too - nice indoor pool; take-away; restaurant; shop; play area. It's really clean and friendly and a lovely spot for your last night of holidays.

However, if you're travelling at a peak time of year you would be advised to book.

It does look a nice site but I've just been through their availability page and for 2 adults, 2 kids & hook up it comes to 53 euros  (prob cos it's peak time when we're travelling).  That's a bit steep when we won't have time to use all the facilities.  Thanks for suggesting it but does anyone know of anything a bit cheaper

Hi Shirl, The municipal in Calais is okay for a nights stop, have stopped there three or four times, right on the beach, with town center just a short walk, but you do have restaurants close by, charge was about 11euros a night, you can actually see the ferries coming and going from the site, to get there just drive through town over the bridge by the port and you will see the old fort on your right just past on the right is the site, park up and go in the office, fellow speaks english, what time is your boat next day? as there is a security barrier and the office is not open until 8.0am, but you can arrange to have the barrier lifted earlier if you need to,no need to book.

Theres a campsite at Bleriot-Plage(Camping Du Fort Lapin, tel 0033 321 97 67 77.) which should do as its fairly large & cheap-as you come up the motorway from Boulogne pass the exit for Eurotunnel, take J43 & head toward the coast, 2 miles, you come to a roundabout just before Calais seafront-turn left down D940 coast rd & campsite is on right after a mile. I doubt they take bookings but you should get in -it is only 10mins from tunnel & nr Calais Auchan Hypermkt--

We've stayed on the  minucipal aire next to the beach at Calais for an overnight. It's really handy for ferries, the kids can go on the beach and you can get the best chips ever from a van there that'll feed everyone really cheaply!  A small downside is that you're parked very close together but there is an atmosphere of camaraderie about the place. There are some nice restaurants close by and it's fascinating watching the ferries come and go...and it's cheap.
