We have been thinking of (probably more like dreaming) of living in Spain.  On browsing through caravans on ebay there are caravans for sale on permanant pitches near Benidorm.  Compared to buying a house this would be a far cheaper option.  They have a "fitted" kitchen set up in their awnings. With sink, oven, chairs, couch, tvs etc etc

Anyone got a caravan sited in Spain.  Wot are the pros and the cons of such a venture ???

Cheers  !!!

Don't laugh - the weather. Its great while the sun shines but if and when it does rain and the site has not got heroic drainage, you will be in trouble

Thought I heard recently that the Spanish government was clamping down on sited tourers...something to do with the fact that they must be able to move them at short notice.
Not sue wher the info came from, but be aware.....looks a great option though.
I think the best source of info would be www.sunseeker caravans.
Hope this helps.

We live in Spain permanently having started by spending the winters over there when I retired and over several years extending the stay until it came to the point that we decided to sell up and move over permanently. The first couple of years  we spent in our tourer and still know many people who are sited all year. The restrictions apply to 'permanent structures' e.g. wooden sheds, chalets etc but the degree to which the rules are enforced depend on the site. It is often posible on some sites to rent pitches with outside kitchens/bathrooms etc. already erected.

The main things to consider re healthcare as the EHIC only covers emergency treatment, vehicle (it might be easier to sell your UK registered RHD and replace it with a LHD vehicle before you leave. Providing you reregister in Spain within 6 months of obtaining your NIE number there are no import taxes/duties and secondhand cars in Spain are much more expensive.

A lot of information is available on the web from the various government websites and others such as  http://spain.othercountries.com/pages/articles/index.asp?page=residencia-NIE

Certainly the Costa Brava area can get pretty cold in winter as we found our first year here. Costa Blanca, Costa Calida and Costa del Sol are best for the weather but the area you choose depends on what you are looking for both weather wise and in terms of whether you want to be in a 'British' community or one more mixed.

Good luck and go for it; we've never regretted once, and I can fly back to UK in a couple of hours for around £70.00 return if I need to and can pick my flights a few weeks in advance outside of the main holiday periods.

Hi NickW

The site near Benidorm so far interests us more.

In your experience how is it living in a caravan all year round.  What do you do with all your things.  As we all now living in a house we collect a lot of personal belongings and bits and bobs which needs space to keep it all in.

Is it staight forward to get your NIE number ??

What do you do for everyday healthcare / visits to a doctor which are free in the UK.

Are all year round sited caravans close together and would this leed to privacy problems.  I notice looking at some sited caravans for sale that have awnings kitted out with kitchen n lounge which have tv as well - would noise irritate people from it.

How do you secure all your items.

Is anyone watching Ricky Tomlinson on BBC2 at 1.30 - Ricky's Castle in the Sun - he's buying a Hobby and siting it on a pitch in Benidorm, then adding a proper flush toilet and tiled shower, awning, and patio - and all on a budget?

For anyone who's thinking of doing this it might be worth watching - though it's full of all the usual silly stories about caravanning that you might expect.  He's already described spilling the chemical loo, etc!
