We're off to the Le Mans Classic in July but have two nights on the way down that we need to find some where to camp on the way.

It's just the two of us and we like quiet sites, we don't need EHU, entertainment etc. but we do like sites close to water so rivers or canals would be lovely. Municipals are fine.

Any suggestions for sites - I know it's a big area?!

Hi P

This is reviewed www.campinglebrevedent.com it is circa 3.5 hrs from Calais, and 2 hrs to Le Mans. I suspect there will be other like minded souls on at the time, there usually is, I know some of them. If you hang about on the way back for the 14th,(Bastille Day ). there is a great night at Le B, but you will have to watch out for the "wee jocks".

There is a very good municipal site at Beaumont sur Sarthe which is off the A28 around 20 miles or so north of Le Mans, it is also alongside the river and you can walk into the town.We have used it as a stopover but it would also be suitable for a day or two.

You will find it on this website somewhere.

Strangely enough I'm just looking at that one now! I've seen lots of good reviews for Beaumont sur Sarthe.   I think on reflection, it's a bit further down that we want to go as now looks like we might not manage to get a ferry until the afternoon that we go out.

There's a municipal at Pont de l'Arche just south of Rouen, which may be about the right point for a stopover after an afternoon arrival.  It's fine for an overnight stop and easy to each from the route through Rouen.

Hmmm decisions decisions

Frogman, thanks for your link, it looks nice, at first glance I thought it was too "packaged" for us, but having looked at it it looks good. I guess we need to think about what time we're going to get to France and whether we think we can get that far if we're late.

Val, the municipal looks good and in just about the right location

Any more suggestions?

Hey P

There's no packaging I assure you. So long as you arrive before mid night, you're  in. Or you could just stay in the bar and sleep in the car. I'm pretty sure there are some other ukcs types there at the same time.

Pitching the tent in the dark isn't high up on my list of things to do on my holidays! Having said that we've got the pop up for these circumstances.

Which area of the site would you suggest using?

There's a very nice municipal in the small town of Vimoutiers http://www.mairie-vimoutiers.fr/html/tourisme.php (scroll down 2/3rds for the camptsite details). It's about 10m N of J16 of the A28 from Rouen to Alencon, and about 70m from Le Mans. The town of Camembert is a few miles down the road.

Hi P

It is a pretty laid back place. The owners are a young couple who are most helpful. Re pitches you have a free choice of what is available, difficult to say not knowing your preferences, but you can choose between "au sauvage" lakeside, or in area of restaurant is more civilised. Ooooooo wonder what that might flush out?

.... Oi - we're a civilised bunch (most of the time).

As FM says the 14th is always guaranteed to be a good night at Le Brevedent - Raph's firework display is usually spectacular to say the least. For the tent I'm sure lakeside would be fine - but you don't want to be pitching by the lake in the dark. Go for one of the top orchard pitches - beside the chateau, handy for all the "facilities". As for the restaurant pitches - they are generally occupied by an unruly bunch at that rime of year - I'd steer clear.

There's also a lovely little Municipal at Belleme, about 50km from Northeast of Le Mans on the D301. We stayed there in August last year; cost about 8euro!

If you can manage to get to Bernay, the municipal site there is OK, quiet and good pitches, not far off the new A28.
