Hi, we are going to the South of France at the end of July and want to drive for about 5 hrs once we have landed in Calais.  Does anyone have any ideas for hotel stopover at a convenient point approx 5 hrs into France? Many thanks

Dijon at about 350 miles is half way. Lots of hotels on the ringroad and not far off the autoroute. probably about 6 hours without stops though.

Do you want to relax at the hotel or just arrive, sleep, breakfast and go do something else?

How many in the family/group?

Thanks for that - I had looked at Dijon but didn't know how long it would take - 6 hrs should be ok with both hubby and I driving.  I'll have a look and pre-book something around there.  Can't wait now - camp site is booked and we have booked the return stopover for 3 nights (just outside Disneyland, Paris) - just need to book ferry as well then that's us done!

Sorry Huw - got carried away in my response to Harry B!!  We just want to drive - stop & get to St Aygulf as quickly as possible.  We have arranged a longer stopover on the return journey as we wanted to incorporate it with a visit to Disneyland.  There are 4 of us - me, hubby & 2 children aged 10 & 13.

Hotel BB have family rooms with 1db and 2sb on split level, ensuite shower/toilet, eat as much as you can breakfasts. They are close to autoroutes. They have zero charm but 100% function.

Orleans is 300 miles from calais.

Book a room on line or expect to see hotel full sign -

alternatives are chartres [much nicer stopping place but not so far] or Bourges if you are heading down via clermont Ferrand and don't mind 'going for it' [easier to do if you know there is a room waiting for you].

After 9 p m you check in using an english display machine outside.

I have booked a Hotel B&B in Dijon for 1 night - family room for 4 - only costs 75euros including breakfast - brilliant value.  By travelling that bit further it should cut down on the drive to the coast - giving us more time to put the tent up!!! Never done this before so it will be real adventure.

Thanks for your advice.

You'll have a wonderful time!  France is great for camping - and as you can see, pretty good value for money too.

I have a quadruple hotel room booked in Blois - cost £84 for two nights.   This might not be far enough south for you though?

Have stayed in the B&B Dijon twice on return from the south with folding camper. Just up the road and round the corner is a great steak restaurant called the Buffalo Grill. Reasonable prices and yummy steak.

Sounds ideal - a steak & a glass of vin rouge will do me fine!
