Hey everyone, we're looking for a mountain site in Austria to visit during May. Ideally it needs to be within sensible driving distance from an airport, and walking distance to a town or village for the evening. Any ideas - can't find any info on here (unusually!)

Here's a link to various other threads about Austria which may help.

It might be worth looking at the Camping Cheque website - gives a handy map of Austria, with various sites shown, and there facilities listed, and in May you'll pay only £10.30 per night on any of these sites. There's a site near Innsbruck but don't know how near it is to a village for night time, sorry.  It's many years since we were in Austria (1976!!) - when we did stay in a lovely site near Salzburg, but the name, and many other details, escape me!

Camping Natterersee http://www.natterersee.com/urlaub-am-campingplatz-in-tirol.php above Innsbruck might suit. Its within walking distance of the village of Natters which has a direct tram link down into Innsbruck from outside the mani station. The main airport in the area is at Salzburg which I am sure has a rail link to Innsbruck. There must be many other sites as well.

Hi Ali

It's fantastic right now.  We arrived in Niederau at 18.00 yesterday, and it is still snowing.  Too tired to ski today as we drove 780 miles yesterday, but unpacked, taken the dogs for a walk, and sorted ourselves  out.

In this part of Austria (less than 10 miles from Camping Itter) temps can be around 30 degrees C in May, so anyone coming here then, pack accordingly.

Have fun wherever you go Nigel

Natterersee does make a good base for touring

It is very hand for Italy as well

You will be hard pressed to find a restaurant that is not good in Austria (on or off camp site)

Just one point David - Innsbruck has its own airport with a number of UK flights charter and scheduled.  We are collecting 3 couples from there on Friday - they are flying in from Bristol.

Salzburg is a long way away by comparison

If you like Natterersee you will love Camping Itter (and many many other sites in Austria)

Michael

I don't fly so my experience of airports is, I admit, a bit sketchy! I just remember planes landing at Salzburg when we were on the ramparts of the Schloss. However if there suitable services to Innsbruck it would made Natterersee an even better bet.

It is very close to Innsbruck airport.  Easyjet have just started their Bristol service.  BA also go there, but it is seasonal.  Various charters go there.

It is 8 miles to Innsbruck airport and 114 miles to Salzburg

Have fun David

Natteresee also accepts Camping Cheques up until the end of June, so seems to be a winner all-round!

Thanks everyone. We're aiming to go late May early June - what's the night time temperature likely to be, any ideas? Part of the prob is being able to take the right tent and kit without having to re-morgage to afford the ridiculous extra baggage costs!!!

Hi there Michael!  Grrr you have this habit of making me very very envious you know, I could so do with a holiday right now it is unreal.  Have a lovely time, the snow has been fantastic this winter hasn't it, you make the most of it and stay safe.

Nigel I have been quite a few times at that time of year.  There can still be snow around or like Michael said it can be mid to late twenties!  The evenings can be decidedly cool though depending how high up you are so I am afraid you do need to pack for all eventualities.

I have sat at the top of the Hohe Salve sunbathing in mid June at 80 degrees, and had hot chocolate and strudel knee deep in snow at the same time of year!

Hi Ali

skied yesterday - Great

going skiing now (the sun is shining)

Unbelievably good snow at this time of year, and more forecast both this week and next

it's a hard life in the mountains (if you don't weaken)

Michael
