It's one we've considered a few times but the roman theme's not really us .... it is in a good situation though.  We were surpsrised how early sites in south France seem to get booked up. Our first choice municipal at St Remy was booked up before they officially opened bookings on 1st Feb, the next site we tried at Uzes was fully booked too in early Feb, and the site we are going too in Gard Provencal 25km west of Nimes only had 4-5 spaces left by mid Feb when we booked.  What I guess I'm saying is if you think you'd like it I'd book up pretty sharpish .... good luck and enjoy!

We turned up there beginning of last August and couldn't get on for more than one night. The town has a festival (opera?) at the end of July/beginning of August and in the end we couldn't get onto any local sites for more than a night which with a tent really isn't worth the effort. We ended up driving back towards the motorway and finding a site. In the end we stayed at a lovely site in the middle of nowhere with just French and Dutch families so we had a nice time for a few days. Therefore I suggest you book soon. We didn't go onto the site and it is walking distance to the town but it did look like a very large site.

There are tons of sites around Vaison. They range from a la ferme to all singing/dancing jobbies. If you get on one, try to plan a route that avoids the Vaison town centre with your caravan - some of the roads are seriously narrow in the centre, and it can get a bit comedy with trucks going to the big Leclerc on the edge of town.
The area is totally fab. We are returning there this Summer - we have never been to the same place two years running in nearly 30 years of french holidays. So that must say something about the area.
Suggest you google "Vaison camping" "Drome camping" and "Buis camping." You should find something in the area. But there is a major choir festival there every summer and all accomodation fills up.
Alan

There are loads of Roman ruins in Vaison. Don't bother - the info is rubbish. But the Leclerc is excellent.
