Doing Poole to Cherbourg this year to go to Brittany with a stay in L'anse du brick just outside cherbourg overnight. It's bloody expensive but there are 6 of us with a twin axle 26 foot van. The crossing is £597 with Brittany ferries. This price is through the Caravan Club and about £80 cheaper than going direct to Brittany Ferries. Does anyone know any cheaper ways through discounts other than travelling in the middle of the night?

Try using a specialist ferry broker such as MY FERRY or A FERRY TO etc.etc.

When you have been on a few websites phone the companies up and say "so and so are only charging me x amount can you beat it"

The worst that can happen is that these sites are no cheaper but they usually are.

I think your reckoning seems about right - and you're probably right to choose the Cherbourg crossing and the lower fuel and toll costs.  You're obviously not towing, from the very reasonable ferry prices you've quoted, and this makes a huge difference.  For those of us who are towing the ferry costs are probably at least twice as much, if not more - and so the cost difference between the short and long crossings is quite different.

I notice your in Ireland. Can you not go direct from Rosslare. Thats what we are doing this year. Our first trip to Brittany last year turned into a bit of a trek. We went Larne /Cairnryan drove to Dover/Calais and on from there. Cost a fortune in fuel and pretty heavy going even though I drive a truck for a living.

This year we have booked Irish Ferries from Rosslare ( Tescos paying half! ) overnight to Roscoff and then we have a short drive to our campsite. Worked out a lot cheaper this time although we are going early June instead of August and we get an extra two nights at the campsite compared to last year.

No good if you still want to visit your friends in Oxford though.

Hiya tnb1,

I wouldn't mind going from Rosslare but the prices are mad.Going to start saving those tesco vouchers for next year though!
