Have a look at the Camping Cheque website  www.campingcheque.co.uk (£10.30 per night if the dates suit you).  There are two campsites near to Pompeii, Camping Nettuno, and Villaggio Turistico Azzura.   Haven't actually been to the sites, but have been to Pompeii - when we stayed in Sorrenton - and we loved the whole of that penisula, including Capri.

We camped at Sant Antonio in Vico Equense. It is south of Pompeii and north of Sorrento. You need to be pretty confident at towing as there are lots of winding bends.
We tended to use the coastal railway for most of our day trips, as they are cheap and reliable, and parking can be a bit of a nightmare at peak times.
Cheers,
Jim.

Just a suggestion if you do go to Pompeii. The place is much bigger than you would expect it to be, and guided tours only take you to certain parts of it - you will miss out on an awful lot. Better if you can to buy a guidebook and go on your own then you can explore freely, but take plenty to drink as it gets very hot.

I'll second that. Also take a hat and the usual long sleeved tops and sun creams.
Enjoy the little building on the corner.
Best of luck.
Jim.

Don't forget to visit Vesuvius, too, whilst in that area.  The views from the top are absolutely spectacular.  I think you have to do the top section on foot now, since the chair lift isn't operating any more - but it's worth the effort.  You can drive up, and park  near(ish) to the top.  Again, take lots of water to drink, and cover your head - and make a start very early morning, or leave it until after the mid-afternoon peak heat - as it can be very hot at the start - but cools down considerably at he top.

Be warned, it's a long walk from the car park to the top! Wear some decent footwear too, as a lot of the path consists of loose shale.

it can be very hot at the start - but cools down considerably at the top. That's what we got told, but it was still very hot up there when we went.

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed when we got to the top as there's nothing there except a big hole (not really sure what I was expecting!) but the view over the Bay of Naples is amazing. It's certainly worth the effort of walking up there. We think it's the closest thing we've seen to the view you get from the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town.
