Hi,
We used satnav in France last year (3 months hol) and saw plenty of police on the side of the roads. No problems from any of them.
I would say use it as you would in the UK. Keep the map book to hand and cross reference (we had one incident where I had to reverse the caravan back up a steep hill because the road didn't go any further despite the satnav thinking it did).
