Hi there

We have booked a crossing from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on 17 August, returning on 31 August with Condor Ferries and it cost us £166 (including car and folding camper).

We have paid up to £600 in peak season for a crossing to St Malo (where a cabin is needed) but we found the extra distance from Cherbourg to St Malo only adds perhaps an hour or so onto the journey so the cheaper ferry crossing is worth it.

As for campsites, we always find them cheaper and with better facilities than in the UK in peak season...if I recall correctly last year 2 weeks in Royan cost us about £200 in pitch fees and that was on a "high spec" site with pool and entertainment etc.

We are travelling peak July/Aug, Dover - Calais, car, TT, 2 adults. £180 for day time crossings, P&O. Staying in a quiet campsite (an old olive grove) in Provence with a pool and not too much else for 19€ a night - 2 people and leccie. Doing 2 overnights each way at less than 20€ a night.
Hope that helps.
Alan

If you are going to book a crossing, do it asap, the prices will rise, the closer to July/Aug you leave it.

Norfolk Line seem to be the cheapest at the moment for ferries - from £49 each way, for car and trailer.  Book asap.

Campsites can vary depending on what you want - from about 8 or 10 euros per night for a basic municipal site (which can be excellent) to around 30 - 50 euros per night for all-singing, all-dancing.  However, if you go after the middle of August you can get some bargain rates on the bigger sites by using Camping Cheques, Touring Cheques, or an ACSI card - which give discounts on the normal site rates.  There are some sites, even in the south of France (which is the busiest area) which take Camping Cheques from mid-August, and if you'd like a copy I've done a list of them - with the site website details, too, so that you can check what price you'd be paying if you booked directly with the site.

Have you any areas in mind - and what sort of things would you like on site and in the area??  If so, someone on here will be able to recommend a good site.

I checked Norfolkline last night it came to £196 - more than P&O for the same daytime sailings. Just to think it was £58 return last year, but not towing. Too much in love with comfort to do night-time crossings these days.

We go on the Channal Tunnel cost is about £220 that's taking a 24ft motor home.

Campsites very when we went to spain last year we stopped a night a Claremont Ferand and the site only cost 30 euros the site in spain cost 55 euros a night 5 of us. Fab site.

Have a look at the sites you are interested in price them up and decide what your budget is, then what you want from the site.  Work it out from there.

Hope you have a fab holiday

This is all such a lottery, isn't it.

There has to be a better way to organise fares than this.

I think it's supply and demand.  Book as early as you can and you'll get the best prices.
