Our son is marrying a Polish girl this summer, wedding is near Krakow. We are driving there and back and making a holiday of it. The plan is to try and get from Calais to Krakow in about four days with three overnight camping stops on the quickest route; on the return journey we can be a bit more leisurely. Trouble is according to the Alan Rogers guide campsites in Germany seem a bit thin on the ground for a straight journey from west to east. Has any one done this before? How long did it take? Please suggest any suitable sites, we do not want much in the way of facilities as we can't stop to enjoy them; just clean basics really.

We stayed here. It is on the German/Polish border. Very nice with a decent restaurant so you don't have to cook. Not far from the autobahn.
The ASCII site has loads of German campsites.

We spent a fortnight exploring Dresden/Leipzig/Meissen etc - fabulous. Paddle steamer on the Elbe to the old kings palace etc. Seeing the rebuilding of Dresden. We had a great time. Our route was south to Cologne then pretty well due east via Erfurt, to Dresden with a stop at Weimar.
If you have never been to Krakow before, be prepared to have your mind blown. It is just gorgeous. If you want to explore Poland a bit, head south to Zakopane in the Tatra mountains - pure picture book. And the Poles are lovely.
We flew there - it is a hell of a long way to drive. They will be 4 very long days. When we drove to Dresden (on the Polish border) we found the motorways quite slow in East Germany with loads of road works. Take care, we saw some horrendous accidents too in the fast bits. There is a real knack to Autobahn driving.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your reply, however there was no link to the actual campsite in which you stayed. The ASCII site looks like it will give us a lot of choice, I had not discovered this site before, so thanks. We had thought about 6 hours of driving over the four days would get us there, perhaps I have underestimated the quality of the roads!
