We go to Holland in July, our first trip abroad with the caravan and I'm now beginning to try to make a list of things we need that we don't normally need for caravanning in the UK.

Do we need a 2 pin adaptor for connecting the caravan electrics to the electric post on the site?

I have read about reverse polarity abroad, but to be honest am confused as to what it means and how I would know if this was the case!! Can I test it somehow and if it were the case, what would I do??

I read that we will need 2 warning triangles, a first aid kit and spare bulbs and the healdlight adaptors for the car.  Can you think of anything else that we have to have?

Also what is the name for diesel?  I hate getting to pumps overseas and having to guess!!

Thanks to you all in advance.

Dutch campsite electric plugs are same as here blue/white, Ive never seen any 2 pin domestic sockets like you have in France, polarity is a non issue in Holland, their own domestic plugs go in either way, personally I say if you have modern electrical equipment reverse polarity dont matter, others will dissagee, so you wil have to make your own mind up.

If you want to go down the reverse polarity checking route you will have to buy a polarity checker & you will have to make up your own reversed leads as it is illegal for a retailer to sell them, sorry if this has confused the issue for you even more, but there it is, personally I woukld forget about reverse polarity but its your choice.

If you have a modern car with clear plastic headlamp lenses dont stick tape or beam benders on, they will overheat & get hairline cracks. Get plastic headlamp protectors & stick the benders on them, alternativly just drive with your dashboard headlamp adjuster in low position, you wont dazzle anybody.

Diesel, is diesel, with black pipe & spout same as here but be careful because(I think)lead substitute petrol has blackpipe/yellow spout if in doubt ask, most Dutch speak fair English---hope this helps.

As Marty says Dutch plugs are usually the standard CEE17 (blue) ones we use in the UK. If you want some help with continental electrics have a look here http://www.davidklyne.plus.com/frencheuropeanelectric.htm

Yep, blue plug on all campsites.
And certainly not the French plug as they have a centre earth pin, while we have side earth, but on campsites just the blue plug.

we've also had sites with 2-pin plugs in Belgium and Netherlands, they only cost about Ģ5 - and don't take up too much room

don't forget to take your documentation plus copies, may also want to think about getting hi-viz jackets for all travellers - it's coming in slowly but surely

may even happen in the UK one of these days

Many thanks for all your advice.

I think it will be worth getting the 2 pin adaptor anyway.

I liked the tip to get headlamp covers, that's a great idea.

Cheers again

Standard blue plugs, but make sure you check the amp rating on the site. Some Dutch campsites are 3 or 4 amp only.
