we'd love to do a lakes and mountains camping trip in europe with the kids with the shortest amount of driving possible. Any ideas for a campsite on a lake near mountains that might have things that would suit 12/9/5 year old kids would be great?
Advice on best crossings would be wonderful too!
thankyou for your help

I think Ninja is right on that one. Eastern France starts to get more mountainous around the Ardenne region, but for serious lumpiness and a good concentration of quality campsites, you are looking a bit further South and East around Colmar and the Vosges & Haut Rhin area.
thanks - need to get the map out again - would love to do the bernese oberland but the journey looks tough...getting to devon can be hard enough with my 3!
We spent a night near there a few years back and drove around the area with our then 3 teenage boys. We always said we`d go back and spend some more time there but never quite made it.
There ae not 'proper' mountains like the Alps but is is a beautiful region with plenty of water based activities for youngsters
We stayed up in the mountains from Annecy at Le Grand Bornand. Half an hour run back in but without the massive traffic congestion although in June it was fine. I believe July and August are horrific though.

Burgundy sites we've used include La Grappe D'or outside Beaune and Le Lac de Panthier. At Annecy we used La Ravoir at Doussard. Unless you are going out of season, I doubt if there would be any slots now.........the area is very popular. I use Dover/Calais, but I believe you can get cheaper crossings by Going Dover/Dunkirk.
Yep Norfolk lines Dover to Dunkerque are brill, good price and also no coaches or groups and the ships are new.
We stayed at Le Grand Bornand but again high season they are likely to be fully booked already. It was something like 530 miles from Dunkerque down to the Alps and we stopped overnight at the municipal site in Troyes using our pop up tent.
Also the Pyrenees. We went there a few years ago when the kids were 5, 7, 11 and 13. We took the Portsmouth to Caen ferry overnight. Then it's about a 9 hour drive to Carcassonne, the old city is a fairytale.
If you do the overnight ferry I would always book a cabin for the kids to sleep in, people sleep everywhere and it can be very difficult to find a family size space.
