We want to escape the bad UK weather and high prices, by camping abroad this year, anybody been to some good sites in France?? We have all our own equipment, but would consider a static site, as our new car has a tiny boot :-(

We definitley want a site with a pool, and would like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Any ideas anyone??

Well you wont escape high prices because it will cost as much or more than the UK this yr with 80p=1€. if you want good weather gauranteed July/Aug you will need to take the short 700mile drive to the Med coast, anywhere else in France, like the SW coast or Dordogne it could be hot, or it could rain(like all last July) Work out where you want to go then you should get some site recommendations.

Try some of the independent camping operators web sites. That will give you some idea of the sites and areas you could be looking at

Better weather in my garden than most of southern France this weekend - It has been raining down the Ardech for 3 weeks!!

€ is indeed going to make a significant difference for all overseas hols - and fuel increase will double the effect.

Have a look at the deals on statics at French freedom hols I posted - I though the deals looked very competitive

P&O have a sale on though £50 return - act sharpish - it ends V soon

Stick to the east coast ferry crossings.......Dover/calais/Bologne. The rest are much more expensive. For weather reasons, go south of Paris, as others have said theres no guarantee of sun but you do have more chance than in the UK. August tends to be the best month for the sun. Check out the site reviews on the camp site search link above, there are loads of good ones for families. It'll be great!!

Hi hun! Long time no speak =)

Well, our favorite is L'Etang de la Breche in the Loire. We were there last summer and will be there again in 8.5 weeks time (not that I'm counting hehe). Kids love the pool & slides.

TBH though I'm not sure I would like the static caravan area....I much prefer the main perimeter field with it's huge private pitches.

How far are you wanting to travel?

Start off in the North, be flexible, and also be prepared to follow the sun, (if that's what you want), but last year we did this and ended up not far from the Med.
Some people would hate this, but we saw it as an opportunity to see parts of France we'd never seen before.
Use municipals, and the local pools, to keep the costs down.
As long as the kids are happy, you shouldn't have any problem.
Jim. (father of three grown ups).

Hi Claire

Yes sorry it's been so long....but I'm back in camping mode again, I've just got back from the US and all I can think about is my next holiday!! To be honest camping is a firm favourite with the family more so than America!! I'll check out your site, I really wanted a recommended one rather than "winging it". I would prefer to take our own tent, but boot space is really down to a minimum, and no roof rack either!! I might look into a very small cheep trailer, perhaps that will be my next post! lol

Keep in touch, hope all the family are well

Jo xx

We'll be camping in France at the end of August. We found the reviews in the Campsite Search section really helpful when deciding not only which site to stay at, but which location.

As to area, what do you like to do on your hols? Are you a sun worshipper/beach bum? Or do you like to explore historical towns or hike the hills? Brittany is always good for a bit of sun, sand and exploration, or the Loire for the gorgeous chateauxand some of my favourite wine.

Ooops, sorry I got carried away.....
