Gosh, Peter, I know a lot of us on here do go to popular places and find pitches on popular sites, without booking, but I'd certainly want to book in what is peak season in France. Good sites, with great facilities often book up early, so you're definitely 'winging it'. You can always find a pitch somewhere, but often these are on smaller sites, without a lot of facilities. I know you're looking for a personal recommendation, but by the time you've followed it up, it may be too late.
If I were you I'd look at a website with lots of sites on offer, such as Geotour or Camping France where you can look at all the sites around La Tranche - and then email as many as you can to see if anyone can offer you a pitch. I'd bite the hand off any half-decent site which offers me a pitch, and if you then find it doesn't suit, spend a half-day visiting the sort of sites you'd like, in the area, to see if anyone can offer you anything better. You can look at Google maps or Geoportail, and find the satellite photographs of the site and area, and on Geoportail you can often determine the individual pitches on a site - just to make sure you're not right next to the disco, or the recycling bins!
Best of luck!! Have a good holiday.
