Hi all, we booked our ferry a  while ago going from dun laoghaire to holyhead with stenaline nd then with brittany ferries going from portsmouth to cherbourg.

We've just bought a roofrack and box however and the height is coming to about 188 cm. our ticket with stenaline is booked as 1.8 m or under and the same with brittanyferries I think. Should I give them a call or wait till we get there? will prob have to pay amendment cost to change it as we booked with basic ticket on stenaline..grr

I'm a bit worried now that they won't fit us on as the crossing we're going on is full, could this be problem or am I worrying unnecessarily?

If I was a good, honest person rather than a pragmatic one, or you had six months to find something else then I'd say definately tell them. Or if you'd been talking a foot or more. But 8cm is about 3 inches.....

...what's the next height band up? 1.8m-2.0m? Or bigger?

Hi, thanks Val, it doesn't seem to say on their website the next size up, options seem to be :car, mpv or 4x4 1.8 m or under ; car, mpv or 4x4 1.8m or over - thats with stenaline .

Brittany ferries options are: car or car with roofload ,but on our e-ticket it states car ,1.83m.

The stenaline e-ticket doesn't give a height however, just states car and number of passengers.

Maybe I should chance it and see what happens when we get there, we're off on monday, talk about leaving things to the last minute!

Love your blog by the way, what a great list and tt ! Oh to be organised one day!

most ferries have low car decks & if you are overheight you wont get on if the higher spaces are fully booked, I suggest you tell'em.

To be on the safe side, best to tell them. We told them we we brought another caravan and it made no difference.

If it says "Car with roofload" and your ticket just says "car" then you'll have to tell them. But if you're armed with the exact measurement to give them it might help. But of course you might be  told on the phone you can't get on the ferry if you have the roofbox ...so  better have a contingency packing plan for this, yup?

PS. As for me being organised? Errrr......given that we're leaving next Thursday and most of the clothes packing has not even got through the washing system yet, no, I'm not!

For 8cm I wouldn't bother. We have a Volvo estate and roofbox and just fit their maximum size for regular cars. They frequently keep us back with all sorts of strange vehicles and fit us in where they can. We were alarmed the first time but have always got on the ferry. I don't honestly know how they'd know we were dead on the limit and not 8cm over!

I wouldn't bother telling them, 1.8 mts is about six foot, and i have never been on a ferry where i cant stand up straight in the car deck. In the worst case let your tires down a little

Went to Holland with a roof box (which we had told Stena about) and they came out with a long pole ruler thingy and measured it before we got on.  We were fine but I wouldn't rely on them not noticing.  I suspect they are used to judging the height visually and measure it if they think you may be over.
