Recently booked a holiday at Lanterna Camp Porec and was a bit alarmed when the company recommended seeking medical advice re vaccination for Tick-borne encephalitis. Apparently common in middle Europe, Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, etc. Apart from not relishing the thought of vaccination we actually dont have time anyway to space them out. Has anyone an opinion on this please, especially travelling to this particular area!

Hi Rosie,

I've never heard of this but it sounds worrying doesn't it? We lived in Switzerland for 4yrs and took our first 2 babies (from birth to toddlers) all over, which regularly included dense-forest hiking and never heard or saw anything with respect to the ticks to alarm us.

On patient-dot-uk they say

" Tick borne encephalitis occurs in warm forested parts of central and eastern Europe, and Scandinavia. It does not occur in the UK

Your doctor or practice nurse can advise if you should have this immunisation for your travel destination.

Generally, the risk to the average traveller to affected countries is small. Immunisation is recommended for people who intend to walk, camp, or work in heavily forested regions of affected countries during late spring or summer when the ticks are most active. In particular, if you stay in areas where there is heavy undergrowth."

It doesn't appear to be a big risk, but for your own peace of mind I'd consult a medical establishment. Let us know the consensus.

Cheers, Pjlbr

Thanks for your information.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office seem to think that you should take precautions. I've generally found their advice to be sound CLICKY

We have booked through Carefree .. maybe advice was on ours because we are going more into the summer. Mixed feelings now as should have given it more thought and think too late now. Will spend whole holiday looking for tics.

Interested to know what you thought of Lanternacamp Ian.

Thanks for advice all

There's an article which explains the problem, what might happen if you'r not vaccinated, and how to deal with tick bites if they happen, in the Saturday Daily Telegraph (last Saturday's edition).  It might help if you read it.  I read it quickly, but didn't think it suggested a 'programme' of vaccination - perhaps just the first one might be a safe precaution anyway???

when we arrived on site we were told the area we were put in was reserved for carefree, it was about 200 yards past the reception just after the camping tour operators tents, and opposite a patissere, we were there 2 weeks and had the area to ourselves. there are 3 restaurants on site 1 next to the reception with slightly limited selection, 1 overlooking the sea, never went there, and 1 next to 1 of the 3 supermarkets, we went there 3 times and the meals were really good, and reasonably priced although the beer was about 17.00 kuna compaired to about 5.90 kuna in the supermarkets. the sea was lovely and clear but there is no sand only pebbles or stone you really need some sort of flipflop, there is quite a few stalls selling beachwear and clothing. there are 2 pool areas, 1,more for little ones but we thought the water in the bigger one was too salty, at the entrance to the site beside the road is a fruit and veg stall, really tasty fruit alot better than we bought in the supermarkets, they also sell spit roast chickens, small, gorgeous but about £6.00. its a massive site so it takes a bit of time to get to know where everything is, but i hope you have a great time there, we did, if you've any questions feel free to ask, if not, hope to hear from you when you get back and tell me what you thought of the site and area.

Thank you Ian. Really good to read your thoughts about the site .. Im going to print and take them with me! Unfortunately we have to go in summer holidays for next couple of years so guess it will be very busy.

Looking forward to going but as always daunted by the journey until we actually get going. Just hope there is enough fuel available!

Hi Rosie,

I hope that I'm not late with information. I'm from Croatia and I can say that at coast area you don't have to be afraid of tick byte. Ticks are prevalent in some northern parts of country, but never at coast. Hope it helped. If you need some other information, feel free to ask.

That's a relief !! - we're just back from the Island of Krk. Never heard about this problem before we went but have just read this thread. Will post a review later.

We were at Laternacamp last June and although it is large we were so far away from other campers it felt as if there were no other people about. san. facilities were spotless and cleaned out 2 / 3 times a day, got a few pix on my website.

Ian D forgot to mention the suckling pig done on a spit and so tender, it is almost worth the trip in itself.  Going back to Croatia next month up the coast to Camping Mareda, only because we have bought vouchers for £9 a night and only need six for 7 nights.  Hope it is as good as Laterna.
