we also used to play "guess the snack", (mini cereal boxes/dried fruit/different flavoured drinks/mini crackers. makes a bit of a mess but it keeps them quiet. their answers have to be very specific. I always found them when you stop for a 'picnic' they are too busy running round to eat, so this worked really well. it would take about 15 minutes to guess - then 15 minutes to eat, then a game for 15 minutes, then start again, can easy pass couple of hours. a real challenge to try to find different types of things for snack too.
thats always assuming they dont fall asleep in the car - bliss!

My 2 suffer very badly from car sickness so are well medicated before we leave making them very sleepy (tragedy!) but I also managed to pick up a Roald Dahl audio book CD collection with all the favourites in it for £12.99. Bargain. Got it months ago but I have resisted the temptation to show it to them untill we leave for France (4 weeks today!)

We were given a 2 screen dvd player which attaches to the driver and passenger headrests. Must admit to it being the best thing for keeping them amused when we are travelling.
I know that they aren't everyone's cup of tea though.

Kids watching DVDs for 5-7 hours a day is not something I would let my kids do normally, but on a long journey it makes the whole trip so much easier and less stressful if the children are content. I got two seperate cheap dvd players to avoid the "I don't want to watch that one" I find the cheaper makes of DVD player lasts longer than premium brands due to the abuse our last one took and what our new ones have already taken this year. Just make sure you bring a good selection of dvds

If I got a DVD player for the car I'd never get my eldest out of it again! One of the things I love about camping is not having a tv. I could tell he was deprived last year when we got on the ferry and he sat gazing at the screen with the adverts on!

Remember a good wife always helps her husband with the dishes.
Thank you all for the good ideas. We have about four hours to do in England and four in France so hopefully we will be able to keep them amused with some of these new ideas.

We solved that one when the kids were younger by informing them that the power supply only worked from the car, it could not be used whilst the car was stationary because it would flatten the battery.
