As we are all watching with trepidation the FX rates that we can get here, can people returning from France advise what rates you are getting out of the ATM's and Banks ?

We have a Nationwide card so the fees will be zero but wondering what the rates are at the moment compared to our rubbish rate of 1.20

Thanks

We went in May, when we got 1.21 from M and S - and 126.8 from the ATM in France on one occasion, and 126.9 on another - so we couldn't grumble.  Our Nationwide Credit Card also gave us a good exchange rate, in the same order, and there are no transaction fees either.

If using a cash card in an ATM abroad the Nationwide (or similar) is the one use. When we were in Germany Margaret and I both took cash out of the same machine. Mine using my Natwest card and Margaret with her Nationwide. There was about a 5/6 cents difference in the exchange rate, infact a better rate that you could buy in the UK. In future I will transfer money into Maragaret's account and use her card!

It usually is - but with most cards you have a 'transaction' charge for every withdrawal, which offsets the increase in the rate offered.  However, with a Nationwide card you don't pay any transaction charges, and get a better rate too.

Hope the weather is kind for you.

Yup - the rate you get with Nationwide normally matches the rate on XE which is always better than the high st.

The problem with changing cash is that you'll also pay a 'fee' each time you change it - and you'll also have to find a bank open,  which can be a real pain.  I don't think (personally) I'd take cash as an option to a card, even one with a fee to pay - as there's just so much more risk of losing the money, it being stolen, etc.  It seems such a long time ago that we ever went near a bank - nowadays it's just like being at home - go to the cash machine, withdraw some money, spend it, go to the supermarket, insert card into chip and pin, and spend more, go to petrol station, insert card into chip and pin, and spend much more than you used to!!!!!!

No. You need the nationwide "Flex AccountCard". It is a debit card, in that the money is taken out of your account straight away that you use it.

Cheers,

Jim.
