Dave go for it, we had a great time in the South of France last year, long drive, but worth it, Sun, Sea, NO RAIN, Blue Skies, cheap food, cheap booz, friendley neighbours. What more do you need.
Dedley - we are also looking for next year and your criteria seem to tick everything on our list - can i ask whereabouts you went ?????

You'd be better asking in Camping abroad forum, but generally driving in France is a lot less stressful than driving in England because the roads are quieter (even in peak season).
It is worth going even if you don't go far south, because IMO the campsites are a lot better - especially if you want pools with flumes, indoor pools, play areas, tennis, football etc. If you just want to sit in a field you might as well stay in the UK.
For recommendations it would help to know if you have kids, what ages they are, how long you plan to go for etc.

mais non christine
even the fields are better
and as for the municipal sites - brilliant

But itīs all right now, I learned my lesson well.

Sorry about the delay in coming back to you Pumpkin we went to this camp site end of Sept last year had a great time, on one of the last pitches near the river, away from the noise from the bar in the evening. Two Bear Lake 4s side by side (out laws have one also) looked great. http://www.etoiledargens.com/interieur.htm
